Editorial: Hunger Action Month
Nearly 250,000 people in Central Alabama don’t have enough to eat right now—including one in five children.
Alabama ranks fifth in the nation for child hunger. Feeding America says 85% of the hardest-hit counties are rural, and nearly 90% are in the South.
The Community Foodbank of Central Alabama distributed almost 25 million pounds of food last year. Yet the meal gap is about 44 million meals, and it’s likely to grow with recent cuts to federal food benefits.
In Alabama, nearly half of SNAP households have children at home. The food bank is building a new facility in Bessemer that will expand capacity to expand storage and help agencies across Central Alabama feed our neighbors.
Help us fight hunger. September is Hunger Action Month. WVTM 13 is proud to again partner with Milo’s Hamburgers and the Community Foodbank of Central Alabama to raise food, raise funds and raise awareness.

Our goal this year is 50,000 meals. Together we can end hunger for our neighbors in need. We hope you will help us with this fight.
