Meet Wendy Madden, founder of Santos Coffee with origins from her Guatemalan family farm
IT IS HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH AND YOU CAN SEE THE IMPACT FROM OUR NEIGHBORS ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA AND ALL THE WAY DOWN TO YOUR MORNING CUP OF JOE. IF YOU’VE EVER MADE A STOP AT SANTOS COFFEE, YOU FELT THE INFLUENCE OF CEO WENDY MADDEN. BORN AND RAISED IN GUATEMALA, MADDEN OPENED TUSCALOOSA’S CRIMSON CAFE IN 1993. IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST COFFEE SHOPS IN THE AREA. THE CAFE WOULD CLOSE IN 2009, TEN YEARS BEFORE MADDEN AND HER SISTER WENT ON TO FOUND SANTOS COFFEE. THE FRANCHISE CONTINUES TO EXPAND ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA, BUT ITS ROOTS ARE GROUNDED IN THE BEANS THEY HARVEST FROM THE FAMILY FARM IN GUATEMALA. HAD THIS, YOU KNOW, INSTANT CONNECTION TO COFFEE. AND SO THAT’S WHAT WE STARTED DOING JUST SELLING COFFEE FROM GUATEMALA. SO SANTOS MEANS SAINTS, AND IT’S BASED ON THE NAMES OF OUR FARMS, WHICH IS SAINT MARGARET, SAINT ANTHONY AND SAINT NICHOLAS. WELL, SANTOS COFFEE HAS MULTIPLE LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT JEFFERSON COUNTY AND THE BIRMINGHAM METRO AREA. AS WE CONTINUE TO RECOGNIZE HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH FROM NOW THROUGH OCTOBER 15TH, YOU CAN LEARN MORE ABOUT TRAILBLAZERS LIKE MADDEN ON OUR WEBSITE. YOU CAN ALSO FIND MORE HISPANI
