Geography

Oman is a country in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula at the Gulf of Oman. The land has a total area of 309,500 km² (119,499 mi²) and a total coastline of 2,092 km (1,299.9 mi). This land area is approximately 77% of the area of California. Oman is thus the 20th biggest country in Asia and in terms of area ranked 71st worldwide. An exceptionally high proportion of residents (89%) belongs to the urban population.

Oman is comparatively low at an average elevation of 310 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Dschabal Schams) is at 2,980 meters. The country has about 30 islands. There are direct national borders with the three neighboring countries Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. The distance between New York City and the Capital Muscat is about 11,360 km (7,059 mi).

Climate in Oman

In Oman, as in all equatorial countries, there is a tropical climate. Unlike in Europe or the USA, there is almost no difference between the seasons. The daylight hours vary little, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are also lower. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 26 and 41 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 45 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 15 °C in a month's average.
