Geography

Laos is a landlocked country on the Indo-Chinese peninsula between Thailand and Vietnam. The land has a total area of 236,800 km² (91,429 mi²). This land area is approximately 59% of the area of California. Laos is thus the 22nd biggest country in Asia and in terms of area ranked 84th worldwide. Most of the population (61%) resides within rural regions.

Laos lies at an average elevation of 710 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Phu Bia) is at 2,817 meters. There is no access to the open sea. There are direct national borders with the five neighboring countries Myanmar, Cambodia, China, Thailand and Vietnam. The distance between New York City and the Capital Vientiane is about 13,500 km (8,389 mi).

Climate in Laos

In Laos, as in all equatorial countries, there is a tropical climate. Unlike in Europe or the USA, there is almost no difference between the seasons. The daylight hours vary little, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are also lower. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 30 and 35 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 37 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 17 °C in a month's average.
