Biography
Doris Elizabeth Young Finney, a homemaker and a former secretary for the archdiocesan Office of Catholic Schools, died peacefully on Monday, Feb. 18, 2013 surrounded by her family at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center in New Orleans. She was 81. Doris, affectionately known as "Deedy" to her family and friends, is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Peter Paul Finney Sr.; children Barbara F. Weilbaecher (Peter), Jane F. Haas (Ted), Peter P. Finney Jr. (Carolyn), Timothy P. Finney (Gina), Elizabeth F. Donze (Frank) and Michael D. Finney (Janet). She was also blessed with 20 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Doris was born in New Orleans on March 14, 1931 to the late George Joseph Young and Rose Lashley Young. After losing her mother in infancy, she was raised and later adopted by her paternal uncle and his wife, the late Gerard B. Young and Marie Therese Bendix Young. A graduate of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, Doris met her husband, a sportswriter at the States-Item, in an elevator at their mutual employer's former headquarters on Lafayette Square. She devoted her life to raising her six children and helping the poor and marginalized by practicing frequent and often unseen acts of kindness. A gifted watercolorist whose favorite subjects were still lifes, landscapes and birds, Doris enjoyed gardening, cooking, New Orleans architecture, singing and playing the ukulele. Her face would light up whenever she saw her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, even as her health declined. Her involvement in various ministries at St. Louis Cathedral earned her the parish's Order of St. Louis Medallion. Doris is survived by a brother, William Young (Joyce) of Kenner; a sister, Sister of Mercy Mary Claver Young of Oklahoma City; a brother-in-law, Thomas M. Finney (Mary Judice); a sister-in-law, Patricia Finney Daniels; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends from her longtime residences on Hathaway Place and in the French Quarter. The family extends its great gratitude to the caretakers and friends at Vista Shores Assisted Living and Our Lady of Wisdom. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral Mass Friday, Feb. 22 at noon at St. Clement of Rome Church, 3978 West Esplanade Ave., Metairie. The celebrant will be Father Peter P. Finney III, grandson of the deceased.
