Caution

There is a danger of confusing two Richard Warrens who were contemporaries with children in the Massachusetts Bay Colony:

  • Richard Warren, born about 1580 was a passenger on the Mayflower in 1620. His wife Elizabeth Walker, and five daughters Mary, Anna, Sarah, Elizabeth and Abigal, arrived in Massachusetts on the Anne in 1623. While this Richard's place of birth is unknown, his wife's family came from Hertfordshire and he may have been from there.
  • Richard Warren, born before 1575, who lived and died in Dorsetshire, England, and married Eve, was not a passenger on the Mayflower. His daughter Joanna, however, immigrated to Massachusetts.

Warren-24370 and Warren-1095 appear to represent the same person because: based on birth and death, it would appear that these are intended to be the same person. No primary sources provided for parents attached to Warren-24370.

I've made a correction to the text, St George Fordington is not in Upwey which is another parish

In a 1607 Manorial survey of Fordington, Richard Warren held a half place of about 21 acres at a rental of 12s 9d.. The previous copyholder was his mother Alice who was deceased.

Dorset History Centre, D RGB/LL/737, Richard Grosvenor Bartelot, Transcript, Survey of the Manor of Fordington Taken 7 August 1607 Copied from the Original Survey (TNA LR2/207) , 1913 .A tabulated and summarised copy of the survey is to be found in Bartelot ‘History of Fordington’pp 211-18 (1915)

The manor of Fordington was owned by the Crown (part of the Duchy of Cornwall) Most of the land was occupied by copyholders . The land was divided into whole, half or farthingholds held by copy for a yearly rent . By 1607 work on the Lord of the Manors land had been replaced by rents but the land was still divided into strips distributed over a Great field. Each holding allowed for the pasturage of a certain number of sheep, ( a whole place allowed for 120 sheep) a cow or two and some plough horses . Much of the farming was still done in common, and a shepherd and Haywain was employed for the whole manor. Copyholds were passed on according to the custom of the manor rather than common law. There was a fine when each new copyholder took possession. In Fordington, the widow usually gained possession on the decease of her husband and one of the sons (usually the eldest) after her decease.
