Biography

Winifred (___/?Longman) (Crawford) (Wolcott) Allen's parents and origins are unknown. Her first husband was likely John Craford/Crawford who was of Watertown, Massachusetts by 1634. Their marriage is also estimated to be by this date as their daughter Rebecca was born about this time. [1] [2]

There is a marriage record of a John Craford and Winifred Longman, recorded at St. Vedast, London, England on February 2, 1629/30, but is unconfirmed that this is the correct family. [1]

Mr. Crawford drowned on 12 August 1634, after setting out in a small boat with his brother and his servant on the Charles River. The boat overturned and all three men drowned. [1] [3]

Winifred married second, by 1637, John Wolcott at Watertown, likely as his third wife. [1] Her husband John was baptized at Axbridge, Somerset, England on 13 May 1599. [2]

Her husband John Wolcott died by 5 June 1638, when widow Wolcott was ordered to provide an inventory of his estate. [2]

Her husband John Wolcott died owning debts of close to L 1000 to Edward White, merchant of London, and widow Winifred sold many parcels to alleviate that debt, and further deeded other lands to Edward White, along with her third husband Thomas Allen. [2]

She married third, Thomas Allen by 10 November 1642. [1] [2]

Thomas died at Barnstable, Massachusetts in 1680. [4]

In Thomas' last Will, written 18 February 1675/6, and proved on 5 March 1679/80, he left bequests to his children and Winifred's daughters: [2] [5]

  • son Samuel [5]
  • Samuel's eldest son Thomas [5]
  • son John [5]
  • daughter Mehitable [5]
  • to daughter in law Sarah, William Clark's wife - 40s [2] [5]
  • daughter Martha, Benjamin's wife - 40s [2] [5]

From the wording of Thomas's last will, I thought that "Martha, Benjamin's wife" was a daughter of Thomas Allyn's, not a child of John Woolcott's with Winifred. He didn't call her "daughter-in-law." Perhaps not a child of Winifred's at all, I haven't found anything about her, one way or the other. She is not included as a child of Winifred's in the links at the top of the page, but is in her children's list lower down.

A profile just hasn't been created yet, probably because we don't know the identity of her husband and or know if she had any children. The Comments at the end of the Great Migration Sketch on John Wolcott goes into some detail on identifying his wives and children. I'd suggest reading the whole thing, Great Migration vol 7 pp 536-7.

Of the Allyn will he says "Although Martha is not called "daughter-in-law..." her placement between two others who are, with the same amount, indicates that she was another "daughter-in-law"

He also notes that the record copy of the will is clearly defective as it omits her husband's full name (he concludes that after examining the Benjamin family that it is probably a last name that is missing). Rebecca was her only daughter by first marriage, and two other daughters by John Wolcott had been named Martha, neither of whom survived.

He also says: "We should be looking for someone with a first name Benjamin who had a wife Martha, otherwise unidentified."

As stated on that Find a Grave profile page, "There is no proof of death or burial". While the memorial is for the correct person it is not accurate to state she was buried in Old Burying Ground in Brewster, Barnstable County, Massachusetts when it is not known where and when she was buried.

The parish register for Okeford Fitzpaine is now available at Ancestry, so as it happens I checked this out earlier today. The August 1603 baptism is for a base born son of Alice Longman, not for Winifred. I have no clue where the 1701 came from, except the usual wholesale copying (which I was joining in on, before reading this page!).

There are typos in the following Project Box, that I do not know how to go about editing them ?

Winifred (Unknown) Allen migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640). (See The Great Migration (Series 2), by R. C. Anderson, vol. 7, p. 531) Should be: Vol. 7, Page 531

What are the typos? The volume and page are correct and exactly as you state they should be, 7 and 531. If you are referring to the volume and page notations being abbreviated to v and p, that is being done by the template and are not typos, but standard abbreviations for those words. If you are referring to them not being capitalized, again it is what the template is doing and are not typos either.

I wonder where that came from, M.A. She's not named in her last husband's 1676 will and her children sold land that had belonged to her 16 Jan 1694. So it looks like she was deceased at least by 16 Jan 1694, and probably by 1676.

Not only did he not mention Winifred, but he did mention her daughters likely meaning she was deceased.

That is correct Jillaine. I received an email about the suggestion to change the LNAB to unknown and I made the change. Then I looked further into the situation and discovered the duplicate. I put in a merge request for the two, I think Chris' and mine hit at the same time and his ended up on top.

If I had noticed the duplicate first I would have submitted the merge request rather than done the LNAB change. I should have looked things over better before I made the change, but I was not fully concentrating on what I was doing, I was working on a different family line in my Ancestry tree when the email alert about Winifred's LNAB popped up and didn't shift gears smoothly. Old brain gets stuck on one track sometimes.

I did not follow the best route with this, mea culpa.  :-)

AND in general, when there is a an existing duplicate Unknown available (as there was in this case, but John B may not have known that), it's better to merge into that instead of changing the LNAB manually-- reduces the number of redirects the system has to jump through after all merges are done. Thanks.

A new profile was NOT created and then merged. I just followed up on the previous comment that her LNAB needed to be changed to Unknown. This is the original profile after the LNAB change.
