Biography

Abigail was the fifth of seven children born to Samuel Sprague and Sarah Green. She was born on April 21st and christened on November 15, 1702. The Massachusetts Births and Christenings, 1639-1915 lists her birth date as November.

Abigail was married twice. First to Samuel Call, b. 6 Jun 1698, Charlestown, Suffolk Co., MA, d. 1747, Oxford, Worcester Co., MA (Age 48 years), on July 20, 1721. They had 9 children:

Samuel died in 1747 and Abigail married a second time to John Hamen in 1748. They had no children.

Abigail died sometime after 1750, though the whereabouts of her grave and the exact date are not recorded.

As a interesting note, the Sprague Project reported that Abigail Sprague was the second cousin, once removed of Hannah Sprague, who married John Call, Samuel's brother.

Research Notes

A recent issue of The NEHG Register contains a well-sourced article about Samuel Call and Abigail Sprague.^[1] The author, Robert M. Call, shows that Abigail was abandoned by John Hamen soon after their marriage, and divorced him in 1748.^[2] He also makes a strong case that Abigail married a third time to Moses Barrett in 1750 in Woodstock, Connecticut, and died 31 Dec 1768 in Windsor County, Vermont. There is much information about Abigail and her family that is currently missing from this profile.
