Josephine Ritter, daughter of Henry Ritter and Magdeleine Jeansonne, was born on 11 July 1815. She was baptized by Father Michel Bernard Barriere of the St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, USA. Sponsors were Andre Ritter Jr. and Josephine Fontenot.[1][2][3]
Josephine married Pierre Ursin Manuel, son of Ursin Manuel and Sophie Desmarest. They obtained a marriage license at the Opelousas courthouse on 19 October 1829,[4] and were married on 3 November 1829 at St. Landry Catholic Church by Father Flavius Henri Rossi. Witnesses to the marriage were Raphael Manuel, Joseph Bertrand, and Pierre Vesina.[5]
Josephine and Pierre had the following known children:[6]

- Marcelline Manuel, b. 30 Nov 1838
- Cephaline (Zephaline) Manuel, b. about 1840[7]

- Pauline Manuel, b. 8 Feb 1846
- Olene (Alene) Manuel, b. 20 Aug 1848
- Caroline Manuel, b. 14 Mar 1851
The family was living in St. Landry Parish on the 1850 census, with children Henry, Marceline, Cephaline, Pauline, Jean Baptiste, and Alene.[2]
Josephine was widowed by 23 April 1855, when Pierre's succession was filed at Opelousas.[8]
In the 1860 census, she was the head of a household in Opelousas with her children "Sephaline", Jean Baptiste, Pauline, "Oline", and Caroline, and other family members living nearby.[7] In 1870 she was living as the head of a household in the Bayou Chicot post office area of St. Landry Parish with Caroline and Gustave "Fostria" [possibly this is her daughter's Fontenot family].[3]
Nothing is found for her in the 1880 or later censuses, and she is presumed to have died before then. A death of 1872 in Opelousas is found in some unsourced trees, but no reliable source has been found to confirm that date.
Research Notes
Name: Josephine Andree Ritter - The name "Andree", found in some unsourced trees, has not been documented in any record found to date. Baptism and other records of her children have inserted middle names of "Andre," "Henri," or "Henry" for their mother.[9]
It may be that "Andre" was a misunderstanding of her father's name "Henri" which would have been pronounced very similarly. In many records for the Manuel family, the father's name was inserted as part of the child's name, perhaps for clarification purposes, or as a cultural or family tradition. It is uncertain whether the "extra" names were official, but it seems doubtful that Josephine actually had a middle name.
