BUILDING CONTRACTORS Mr. A. F. Ouston, President GRIT BRINGS REWARD Mr. Archibald F. Ouston (president of the recently formed Associated Building Contractors of South Australia), who lives at Semaphore, has many friends. Although left parentless when eight years old he has succeeded in life by his unaided efforts, and now controls a flourishing carpentry and contracting business at Queenstown. '"The aim of our association is to stabilise the industry and show the public that we are a just and upright body of men out to give a fair deal," he said. MR. A. F. OUSTON President of the recently formed Associated Building Contractors of South Australia. "We have taken for a slogan the words 'Integrity, responsibility, and skill,' and hope to elevate the trade by medium of the organisation. To further our purposes we publish the weekly journal, 'The Builder.' " There are 140 members of the association, and the election of Mr. Ouston to the principal office was a compliment to a popular man. Born in London 44 years ago, he accompanied his mother to South Australia when five years old. She was a widow who brought a young family from Britain, but death claimed her three years later. Young Ouston had many vicissituides and gained experience in farming for some years. At the School of Mines he became proficient in carpentry, and when 22 years old settled in the Port Adelaide district, where he has remained since. For a time he was employed by Mr. E. Malin and later was in the employ of Mr. H. Slade. Eight years ago he started business on his own account, and has completed many contracts chiefly for buildings of a residential character. Rifle shooting is the chief recreation of Mr. Ouston, who is a member of the Semaphore Rifle Club. He is also associated with the Rechabite Lodge. [11]
