Jason,

I just joined Wikitree and I'm just scratching the surface on how to use it. I searched for one of my relatives (Onile Fruge). I see that you are the manager for his tree. Onile is one of my relatives.

I also see a comment below that you are intersted in Cajun music. My Grandfather, Dorcenus Fruge, played accordian (which I now have) in a Cajun band. His band even played in Washington DC at the Folklife festival. I'm curious about your interest in Cajun music.

Thank you for the merge offer, you do great work in genealogy

You have been helpful to me. I'm new at this so is there something I need to do? Once again thank you so much. Charlotte Babineaux Johnson

Jason, I noticed you worked on Cajun musicians and thought I'd point out that Michael Doucet is the songleader today at the Daily Antidote of Song. :-)

Jason, is there no way to prevent people from starting new profiles when there are the profiles of the very same people ALREADY ON Wikitree? I was asked to merge a profile I put on back 9 years ago with a brand new profile put on this past August; this occurs over & over without fail. With the various abilities to process information, is there no way to keep this from happening? It's like just borrowing information without any work because it requires a merge.

Hi, Mr. Kermit. I hope you and your family are doing well. Unfortunately, no, I don't really think so; that's just an artifact of the way that WikiTree is set up. Adding all available information to the profiles can help some, including putting known alternate spellings somewhere in the profile (I would guess the Nicknames field is the best place for this). I've certainly had instances where I've added a profile because I couldn't find one already on WikiTree and then only later did I discover they were already here under a different name. When you create a new profile, WikiTree does look for matches, but it's not always robust. I've had at least a few times where I created a duplicate profile because I didn't search enough for existing profiles and the checker didn't catch it. So, I think there's going to always be some level of duplication even when people are acting in good faith; I just accept that as part of the "cost of doing business". But I agree that there are often a number of frustrating cases of obvious duplications. [It sure seems like you have enough info in Pago-1 for someone to find it instead of creating Pago-8]. You might check in with the "Louisiana Families Project" (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/WikiTree-26) to see if there's anything special they do. If you're interested in having less requests to process, they might be willing to take ownership of some of the early-ancestor profiles. They have a number of those early ones that just about everybody from Louisiana connects to. Not sure what your comment about "It's like just borrowing information without any work" means.

Hey Jason, l saw that you edited Dupré-249. Can you do a merge of Dupre-249 and Dupré-887? Thank you.

posted by Pat Songe

Hi Pat, it looks like someone has already submitted that merge request. We just have to wait for the profile managers to approve the merge.

Thank you for the prompt response. I was the person that submitted the merge. I input Dupré-887 not realizing that he was already listed, but under his nickname. I have a feeling that the profile manager does not do good research or stay on top of her entries. Is there a way for me to delete Dupre-887, then I can edit Dupré-249.

posted by Pat Songe

No, no deleting of profiles. It will eventually get merged, just need to be patient. :-) Give it a week or so; if you don't see any progress by then you could contact the profile manager. Feel free to add info to either profile for now.

Hi Jason,

We’ve made some exciting changes to the Global Cemeteries Project. The sub-projects have been merged into the Global Project to help with Leadership and to facilitate collaboration.

Some roles within the project have changed. From now on, there are Project Coordinators for each continent, and one for Welcome and Integration, plus Team Leaders for each individual Country etc.

Please let me know if you’d like to stay on in the new project, if you’d like to continue in an existing role, and which team(s) you’d like to be on. Please also give me your e-mail address so that I can get you added to the project’s Google Group.

Many thanks,

Susie

Hi Jason,

Thank you for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Participation in a Pre-1700 Project is strongly encouraged for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants.

It looks like US Southern Colonies would be a good fit for you. Adding the tag US_SOUTHERN_COLONIES will help you get updates about activity for that project.

Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)

Welcome to the Wikitree Family, Jason!

The initial email from us has helpful links that will get you started on WikiTree, which is not like any genealogy site you’ve ever used.

WikiTree is different because our goal is to have one profile per person, and that means we all work together as a BIG collaborative team!

What brings you to WikiTree? Research you’d like to share? Interested in how your family fits into the big tree?

  • When you confirm your email address, you’ll see a Volunteer option on your profile page. Click that and leave us a short message about your genealogical interests. A Greeters Project volunteer will be happy to confirm your membership, and you’ll be on your way!

We’re really glad you’re here.
