James was born in 1862. He was the son of Joseph Nickell and Lou Maxey. He passed away in 1943.

- In 1870 Jo Green Nickell was living in Blackwater Precinct, Morgan County, Kentucky, United States with his family on a farm they own. He was 34 born in Kentucky, working as a farmer, had $800 in real estate and $650 in personal estate. His wife Lou A was 32 born in Kentucky. The others in the home were children: Mary A 9; James L 7; John C 4; Rachel 7 months.[1]
- In 1880 J G Nickell was living in Blackwater Precinct, Morgan County, Kentucky, United States with his family. He was 44 born in Kentucky, working as a farmer and can read and write. His wife Lou A was was 42 born in Kentucky. The others in the home were children: Mary A 19; James L 17; John C 14; Rachel A 10; Lulie G 1; Mother-in-law Mary A Maxey 72 born in Virginia.[2]
