Biography

John Mitchel was born about 1733 in Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He passed away about 1818. On 4 Jan 1758, in Colchester-Westchester, New London County, Connecticut, he married Hepsibah Shepardson, the daughter of John Shepardson and Abigail Richardson, John and Hepsibah had seven children:

  • Anne, b. 1759, d. 20 Feb 1847
  • John Benjamin, b. 1760, d. 09 Sep 1842
  • Amasa, b. 1761, d. 18 Feb 1819
  • Asa, b. 27 Mar 1763, d. 1 Oct 1851
  • Lois, b. 15 Aug 1765, d. 18 Oct 1847
  • Eunice A., b. 1767, d. 25 Sep 1847
  • Joseph, b. 1768, d. 28 Apr 1847

John passed away on 3 Jun 1818 in East Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut.

LAST WILL & TESTAMENT OF JOHN MITCHEL

In the Name of God, Amen. I John Mitchel of East Haddam in Middlesex County make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament.

As touching my worldly estate I disperse of the same in manner and form following (viz)

Firstly, I order that all my just debts and funeral charges be punctually paid, and my body I commit to the earth to be decently entered at the direction of my executor here after named.

Secondly, I give devise and bequeath unto my dutifull and beloved son Amasa Mitchel one half of the barn which stands north of the houses near by it, and that half of the barn which stands next the road to him & his heirs forever

Item I give, devise & bequeath unto him the said Amasa his heirs and assign forever the dwelling house which stands next on the road south from my dwelling house

Item I give devise and bequeath unto him the said Amasa the sum of dollars sixty six and two thirds out of my real estate to him & his heirs forever.

Item I give, devise & bequeath unto my dutifull & beloved son Joseph Mitchel unto him & his heirs forever one hundred dollars out of my real estate.

Item I give devise & bequeath unto my beloved son Asa Mitchel unto him and his heirs forever sixty six dollar & two thirds out of my real estate.

Item I give devise and bequeath unto my beloved grandson Isaac Williams unto him and his heirs forever the sum of thirty three dollars & one third out of my real estate.

Item I give unto his wife Anne Williams my loom to be her own forever.

Item I give and bequeath unto my two daughters (viz) Lois Ransom & Eunice Scovil unto each of them half the sum that my household furniture shall amount to in said furniture equally divided between them in every respect.

Lastly Whatever shall remain of my estate I give devise and bequeath unto each of my aforesaid sons (viz) Amasa, Joseph & Asa to be equally divided between them and I further order that whatever of my debts & charges shall remain unpaid & satisfied & the satisfying the aforesaid legacies the aforesaid Amasa, Joseph & Asa shall pay and duly discharge equally between them and of this my Last Will & Testament I do hereby nominate and appoint my beloved son Joseph sole Executor. And I do hereby ratify & confirm the same to be my last Will & Testament hereby revoking all other & former Wills by me heretofore made and I do hereby publish and declare this & this only at East Haddam this 19th day of June AD 1816 to be my Last Will & Testament in witness whereof I hereunto set my hand & seal.

John Mitchell born about 1733 in Plymouth is not the son of Joseph Mitchell and Bathshua Lumbart whose other children were born in Kingston, Massachusetts between 16 Aug 1711 and 14 Jun 1731. They already had a son, John, born 18 Jun 1716. See the source: The Genealogical Advertiser: Vol 2 Page 1.
