Biography
Piers Legh was born in 1535.
Piers was probably born at Lyme Hall where his father's family had lived for over a century. Lyme Hall is in Lyme Handley, a major settlement in Prestbury parish, Macclesfield hundred, Cheshire, England.[1]
He was the son of Sir Piers Leigh of Lyme, Knight and his wife, Margaret Gerard.[2] Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Gerard.[2] [3]
Piers was the brother of:
- Thomas, married Katherine, daughter and heir of Robert Langley;[2]
- James;[2]
- Robert;[2]
- John;[2]
- Margery, who was married to Robert Barton of Smethells;[2]
- Ellin Leigh, who was married to John Bouth of Barton.[2]
He married Katherine, daughter of Sir Thomas Venables[2] of Kinderton.[3] [4]
Piers and Katherine had children:
- Sir Piers Leigh of Lyme, knighted at Grenewich, 2 July, 1598, married Margrett, daughter of Sir Gilbert Gerard, Master of the Rolles;[2]
- Edward Legh, of Hallam, Cheshire, married Katherine, widow of Thomas Touchet of Whitley, they had no children,[5] aka Leigh of Grayes Inne;[2]
- Thomas, gent, ussher to the Countess of Essex;[2]
- Elizabeth, who was married to — Lathom of Parbold.[2]
Death
He predeceased his father.[2] Baines (1836), dates his death to c. 1580.[3]
