Biography

Margaret Leighe was baptised at Adlington in Prestbury parish, Cheshire, England, on 19 June, 1582.[1]

Margaret was the youngest daughter of Thomas Legh of Adlington, esq, and his wife, Sibell Brereton, the daughter of Sir Vrian Brereton of Honeford, knight.[2] [3] Margaret's mother, Cibell, was the daughter of Margaret Hanford, sole heir of her father, William Hanford, and her husband, Sir Vrian Brereton, knight, the son of Sir Randoll Brereton of Mallpas (Malpas), Knight Banerett and Elenor, daughter to Peirs Dutton of Dutton.[4]

Margaret was the sister of:[2] [3]

  1. Sir Urian Leigh, of Adlington, heir, baptised at Cheadle in 1566, knighted at Cadez 1596, died at Adlington 2 June 1627, married to Margaret, the daughter of Sir Edmund Trafford, co Lanc, and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Ralph Leicester of Toft, co Chester. Sir Urian and Margaret have a son:
    1. Thomas, heir;
    2. Urian;
    3. Mary; and
    4. Lucy;
  2. Captain Thomas Leigh, baptised at Cheadle on 26 August 1568, slain at Blackwater in Ireland, 1598;
  3. Mary, baptised at Cheadle on 2 November, 1569, buried at Manchester 25 July 1638, married to 1) John Glazier of Lea, son and heir of William Glasiar of Chester, and 2) Sir John Bentley of Breadsall, co Derby;
  4. Edward, baptised at Prestbuy 29 January 1570/1571;
  5. Ranulph/Ralph/Raffe, baptised at Prestbury 27 November 1572; slain at Newry in Ireland;
  6. Elizabeth, baptised at Prestbury 4 August 1574, married 1) Richard son of Sutton of Sutton, co Chester, esq, and his wife Ellen, daughter of Sir Richard Molyneux and 2) Thomas Molyneux of Hawkley, co Lancaster;
  7. Joan, buried at Prestbury, 28 January 1575/6;
  8. Frances, baptised at Prestbury 1 May 1577, buried 4 September 1577;
  9. Dorothy, baptised at Prestbuy on 29 July 1578, buried 19 May 1582; and

Margaret married twice:

  1. on 4 June, 1601, at Adlington, Henry Arderne[5] of Harden, Cheshire, esq, son of John, son and heir of Raffe Arderne, esq,[2] (or son of John Ardern of Hawarden son of John Ardern of Harden[4]), died 2 November 1623[6] [7] Margaret and Henry had children:[6]
    1. Mary, baptised at Stockport on 6 January, 1604/5, was married 22 June, 1626, to Francis Beresford of Bentley, Derbyshire;[7]
    2. Ralph Ardern, born 1610, buried at Stockport 15 June, 1650, married Eleanor daughter and coheir of Sir John Done of Utkinton, Kt, marriage licence from Chester, dated 27 October, 1624;[7]
    3. John, married Margaret daughter of Adam Byrom of Salford, Lancashire;[7]
    4. Henry;
    5. Richard, baptised in 1617;
    6. Fraunces Ardern, baptised on 18 July, 1619, at St Mary Stockport,[8] was married, the same day as her mother married her second husband, to William Davenport of Bramhall, son of William Davenport, Frances' step-father and father-in-law;[7]
    7. Robert, baptised in 1621;
    8. Margaret Arderne, was married circa 1624 to Edward Warren of Poynton;[7] and
    9. Ellen.
  2. William Davenport of Bramhall, co Chester, esq, a marriage licence was granted by the Diocese of Chester to William Davenport, Esquire and Margaret Ardern, Parish of Stockport, Cheshire, widow, on 24 September, 1627; Bondsman, Francis Dukinfield.[9] William, baptised on 25 March 1584 at Stockport, Cheshire,[10] buried at Stockport 24 Mary 1655, was of Bramhall, co Chester, son and heir of Sir William Davenport of Bramhall, knight, widower of Frances, the daughter of Thomas Wilbraham of Woodhay, co Chester, esq.[3]

Margaret Davenport was buried at Stockport, Cheshire, England, on 3 October 1653.[3]

There was a portrait of Margaret with her husband William dated 1628 at Bramhall Hall.[3]
