Biography

John Hughes was born about May 1844 in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England, son of Thomas and Ann Hughes. His birth was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1844 in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England.^[1] He was baptised on 10 September 1846 in Banbury (St. Mary), Oxfordshire, England.^[2][3]

In the 1851 census, John (age 6) was the son of Thomas Hews[sic] in Neithrop, Oxfordshire, England.^[4]

In the 1861 census, John (age 16) was the son of Thomas Hughes in Neithrop, Oxfordshire, England.^[5]

John (age 23), son of Thomas Hughes, married Mary Ann Schofield on 20 April 1867 in Holbeck, St Matthew and New Wortley, St John the Baptist, Yorkshire, England.^[6] The banns had been read on 31 March and 7 & 14 April 1867 in Banbury (St Mary), Oxfordshire, England.^[7]

In the 1871 census, John (age 26) was the head of household in Banbury, Neithrop, Oxfordshire, England.^[8]

William, son of John & Mary Ann Hughes, was baptised on 28 January 1875 in New Wortley (St John the Baptist), Yorkshire, England.^[9]

John's child George Richard Hughes married Florence Pulman on 21 May 1896 in Halifax, St John the Baptist, Yorkshire, England.^[10]

In the 1901 census, John (age 56) a boltmaker, was in The Model Lodging House, Darwen, Lancashire, England.^[11]

John's death (8 March 1913)^[12] was registered (age 70) in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1913 in the Banbury district.^[13]

Research Notes

We know that John was not the father of his wife's daughter, Ethel (Hughes) Teal (1887-1965) from her birth certificate, even though she took his name and referenced him as her father ("deceased", though he wasn't) at her marriage (August 1912).
