Biography
Hannah was born in 1693. She is the daughter of William Hoadley and Abigail Frisbie.
Born 27 APR 1693. Branford, New Haven, Connecticut, British Colonial America. [1]
Died After JUL 1751. Note: She was still living in Branford on 31 July 1751 when she acknowledged 2 deeds (LR7:186, 212).
Note: In Branford land records 4:389-90, Joshua Fuller of Branford, cordwinder, exchanges with Joseph Frisbee for Fuller's half of a tract in the fifth division "formerly layd out to Richard Scaret and myself in right of our wives unto the Estate of Edward and Saml Frisbee of Branford deceased"; acknowledged by his wife Jemima Fuller, dated 9 Jan 1721/2. Then in Branford land records 4:416-7. Richard Scarit, husbandman, sells his part of the same tract, with his wife Hannah agreeing to give up her dower or thirds, dated 12 Mar 1722. (Both signed.) This suggests that Hannah is a sister to Jemima. Then in Branford LR 5:673, land is laid out to the estate of Edward Frisbie Dec'd and Josiah Frisbie upon the pitch of Richard Scarit in right of his wife Hannah formerly Hoadly (22 Jan 1734/5).
From the Hoadley Gen it can be seen that William Hoadley and Abigail Frisbie had children Mary, Hannah, and Jemima.
In Branford LR7:199-200, Obadiah Winter calls widow Hannah Scarritt "mother-in-law", suggesting he was married to an unknown daughter of Richard and Hannah. However, Obadiah did not share in Richard Scarritt's estate. The phrase "mother-in-law" was sometimes used for "stepmother", but since Hannah is still called widow and Scarritt, she does not appear to have remarried after Richard's death. She was approx. 25 yrs old when she married Richard, which does leave room for an earlier marriage.
This question is apparently answered by another land record. In Branford LR3:239, Silas Butler of Branford sold to Barzil Tyler, 2 ¾ acres of the 5th division to be laid out to Barzel Tyler together with ye allowance for fizing(?) …… "ye right of Land came to me by ye right of my wife In and unto ye Estate of Josiah Frisbie Deceased and Samuel Frisbie Deceased both of Branford which was formerly Hannah Hoadly"……."and Hannah Butler ye wife of said Silas Butler freely willingly give up and surrender all her right of Dowrie and power of Thirds"……. Dated 7 May 1714, he signed, she marked. (Thanks to Branford Town Historian Jane Bouley for pointing this record out.).
From Branford Vital Records, 3:1:39, the only two children listed for Silas and Hannah Butler were Jeremiah b. 6 April 1714 and Hannah b. 9 April 1716. If Hannah Butler was later the wife of Obadiah Winter, then Hannah Scarritt would be his mother-in-law. And they would not share in the division of Richard Scarritt's land because Hannah Butler was not Richard Scarritt's child and heir. So it must have been Silas Butler who died young leaving Hannah available to marry Richard Scarritt. No probate information has been found for Silas to confirm this, and no vital records, and no guardianship for his children. There is no further record of Jeremiah Butler, so he may have died young and Hannah named another son Jeremiah later.
On 27 Sept 1750 Hannah Scariot sold for £10 to Obadiah Winters of Branford, "all my right in undivided lands and commonage in Branford". She signed by mark, and acknowledged the deed on 11 Oct 1750 at which time she was called "widow". This is the land mentioned above that Obadiah sold 5 Oct 1751 when he called Hannah his mother in law. (Branford LR7: 122 and 199-200).
On 31 July 1751 Obadiah Winter & Hannah Scarit widow sold for £31 to Isaac Cook Junr of Branford, 2 acres 127 rods of 7th Division "to be layed out of ye estate of Willm Hoadly ye first dec'd". (Branford LR 7:186).
Also on 31 July 1751, Hannah Scarit widow & relict of Richard Scarit dec'd sold "to my son Richrd Scarit" for £12, "all my right of dowries & power of thirds in that lot of upland & saltmarsh that was my sd Dec'd husband's estate ... 10 acres at Stoney Creek ... ye same may be divided or disposed of as fully & lawfully as if my estate therein was fully ended". (Branford LR 7:212).
Hannah would have married Silas Butler about 1713 and Richard Scarritt about 1718, based on the births of her first known child with each husband. There is no record of either marriage in the town or church records.
