Here is an explanation of community member titles, the most significant being Newt (new WikiTreer) and Owl (longtime member).
These titles are for fun. They are distinct from our formal membership types: Guest, Family Member, and Wiki Genealogist.

G2G-1 to 10
G2G is our Genealogist to Genealogist discussion forum.
Forum participants start as Newts and then advance from G2G-1 to G2G-10 until they are Owls. The numbers from one to ten don't have any special meaning. They simply track the participation points and enable us to award a couple badges, for fun.
Newg
A Newg is a new genealogist — a member who is new to genealogy.
(Newgs, see How to Get Started with Genealogy.)
Newt
A Newt is a new WikiTreer — a new WikiTree member.
Elsewhere on the Internet you might hear people talking about "noobs" or "newbies" to describe people who are new. We use Newt.
Owl
An Owl is an experienced or advanced member.[1]
Owls are our WikiTree longtimers.
In G2G, a Golden Owl is one of the few members to have earned 1,000,000 points.
WikiTreer
WikiTreer is a general term for any WikiTree member.
- ↑ This term was used in narrow contexts for years, such as in the Sourcerers Project. Murray Maloney is the first member known to have used "Newts and Owls" together in the way we now use them.
