Biography
Jane Ellen was born at sea, the daughter of Robert Haw and Mary Hewitt. In researching her date of birth, we can noted the following:
- working backwards from her death, her headstone is engraved with a year of birth of 1858
- her son, Edward, only reported her age of 66 years (no months, no days) on her death record in 1924
- in 1901, she reported her own date of birth as May 18, 1857 for the Census
- in the 1861 Census, she was reported as being 6 years of age, bringing her year of birth closer to 1855
In 1861, Robert and Mary Haw, both born in Ireland, were living in Bastard Township, Leeds County, Canada West[1], with their children: Jane, aged 6, born on the Ocean; John, aged 5; and William, aged 3.

The next household is Hiram, widowed at the age of 30 with five children aged 3 to 10.
