Biography

Hugh Gunnison[1] was born about 1612 (based on estimated date of marriage), origins unknown.

He emigrated in 1635 based on the date of admission to the Boston church. He resided initially in Boston, but removed to Kittery in 1651.

1646 Member, Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts

He was an innkeeper and vintner. He was admitted to the Boston church 22 Mar 1635/6 called "servant to our brother Richard Bellingham;" his wife, Sarah was admitted 15 May 1647.

He was one of 58 Boston men disarmed for supporting Anne Hutchinson and Rev. John Wheelwright, but signed the petition 22 Nov 1637 to have his name removed.

He married first by 1637 Elizabeth ____; she died in Boston 25 Jan 1645/6.

  • A 2009 Register article makes the case for her being Elizabeth Kilbourne, daughter of Thomas Kilbourne and Francis Moody.[2]

He married second by 15 May 1647 Sarah (Blower) Lynn, daughter of Thomas Blower and Alice Frost, and widow of Henry Lynn. She married by 1 Jul 1661 John Mitchell, and later Francis Morgan.

He died between 15 Sep 1659 and 31 Mar 1660.

Inventory of his estate was not taken until 4 Nov 1718.

Is there any documentation that Phillip is the son of Hugh? I see this connection on family trees in Ancestry, but with no source connected. I'm trying to determine if Sarah Gullison who married John Amey in Kittery in 1695 connects with this family. Thanks for any info or suggestions.

There's a mention of Philip (Gunnison) in GDMNH at p. 292 mentioning a court case with Ephraim Lynn in 1670 against their step-father Morgan. (That should be investigated.) And on p. 348 mentioning Keziah as granddaughter of Mary and Philip Gunnison.

There's a baptism in 1727 for a Stephen, son on Philip & Hannah Gallishon in Charlestown NEHGR 32:170 (mentioned by Torrey), but I don't see how that might relate.

I note that there's a potential duplicate for Philip here: Philip Gallishan

How do we know the baptism is for the same Hugh?

I don’t but it is an educated guess I suppose. I can only find one High with surname Gonyson/Gunnison/Genison plus variants. Right timeframe, seems to be a Lincolnshire centred surname but it’s only a possibility. I’ll see if jo can get a couple of wills which are filmed but you need to go to a FHC as they are locked on Family Search.

Hopefully one might mention High.

Lissa posted a comment on Elihu Gunnison Jr. -40, (His son's profile) "Can trace he is a Jr. father was Elihu but translated as "Hugh". Can we make a comment on this page about it or change the Suffixes on the other profiles. It is very confusing. Especially with documentation usually being one off. Is there any documentation that can be added confining Swedish church records.

Thanks for pointing this out, Kaylinn. After reviewing the sources, I've removed the "Jr" from his son Elihu's name. There is also no evidence that Hugh was from Sweden. (But I want to check the 2011 update by Anderson.)

The 2011 update by Anderson is about the identity of Hugh's second wife, and says nothing about Hugh's origins. What is the source of Gunnison's Swedish origins?

There was a post on here earlier today from someone, posted in 2013 bout Swedish sources as well. I am not seeing it now and did not write the persons name down. Maybe Lissa can help us out.

On a previous research project I saw Swedish church records with the name Elihu and could have been misspelled as Hugh. I have seen other records refer to his son as II.

Lisa, Could you please provide the Swedish sources. I know you worked hard changing the suffixes. I am changing them back for now since there are no sources provided.
