Biography

Isaac George was born about 1774 in North Carolina. [1] [2] [3]

He was living in Laurens County, South Carolina in 1800. The 1800 census shows Isaac, William, and Ambrose George living in a group. Isaac was 16-25; William was 26-44; and Ambrose was older than 44. This Isaac's children's ages fit the children found 10 years later and there was a woman the same age as Isaac, presumably his wife Martha. [4]

Ambrose died intestate in 1802 and Isaac was the administrator of his estate; [5] so, Ambrose might have been Isaac's father.

Isaac signed probate documents without a mark, so he was literate. Ambrose's estate included books.

Isaac was living in Pendleton District, South Carolina in 1810. Pendleton was adjacent to and west of Laurens. He was about 36 and had a woman of the same age range in the household, presumably his wife Martha. [6]

We know from the 1850 census [2] and an 1889 biographical sketch for Isaac's grandson William Harrison George that Isaac's wife's given name was Martha, [1] but no evidence has been found for her maiden name. See Research Notes below.

It appears that Isaac married Martha between 1795, when he would have been 21, and 1797, when their first child, Jesse, was conceived. The only census we have for Martha by name is 1850, which shows her being three years younger than Isaac. The same year range works for her, if she was at least 18 for marriage. Two sources say she was born in South Carolina and their child Jesse was born in South Carolina; so, Isaac must have arrived in South Carolina 1795-97.

Isaac has not been found in the 1820 census for South Carolina, and the 1820 census for Rabun County, Georgia is missing, but Isaac's family was likely there. [7]

Rabun County is just west of Pendleton District and was created in 1819 from Cherokee lands. [8]

Isaac's family was in Rabun County by 1823, when his son James married. [9]

On 22 January 1824, Isaac bought 490 acres in Rabun County from James Long (Lot 46, 4th District). [10]

Isaac was one of three men who appraised the goods and chattels of the estate of William Price September 1826. [11]

Isaac was in the census for Rabun County, Georgia in 1830. [12] Also in Rabun County in 1830 were Isaac's sons Arthur, [13] James, [14] and Jesse. [15]

Isaac was selected to serve on a Cherokee County petit jury 13 August 1833[16] and again on 12 September 1834.[17]

On 20 February 1837 Isaac sold 40 acres in Cherokee County to Jeffrey Beck for $250, witnessed by Isaac's son Allen.[18]

Isaac (of Cherokee County) acted as attorney/agent for David Kennemore of Walker County in the sale of property in Murray County 25 August 1839. His son Allen was a witness.[19]

In 1840 and 1850, Isaac was in Murray County, Georgia, which is north of Cherokee County. [20] [2] He was a farmer. [21]

Murray County was created from Cherokee County in 1832, but Native Americans still occupied it until 1839.

Also in Murray County in 1840 were Isaac's sons Arthur [22] and James. [23] Arthur was still there in 1850 and daughter Elizabeth was next door with her husband. [24]

In 1860, Isaac was in Cherokee County, Georgia, living with his son Jesse. Isaac was 86. His wife Martha was not in the household. Apparently she had died. [3]

Isaac died before 1870, probably in Cherokee County.

Children

Isaac and Martha had children, but the only one with documentary evidence was:

  • Jesse, born about 1798 in Pendleton District, South Carolina.[1]

Census data tells us that Isaac and Martha also had unnamed children:

  • 1800: 1 male under 10, 1 female under 10;
  • 1810: 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 3 females under 10, 1 female 10-15;
  • 1820: not found;
  • 1830: 1 male 15-19, 1 female 10-14, 1 female 15-19, 1 female 20-29;
  • 1840: 2 females 20-29, 1 female 30-39;
  • 1850: no children.

This tells us that they had children:

  1. Male, born 1795-1800 (Jesse ~1798);
  2. Female, born 1795-1800 (Elizabeth ~1801);
  3. Male, born 1801-1810 (James ~1803);
  4. Male, born 1801-1810 (Arthur ~1804);
  5. Female, born 1801-1810 (Jane 1806);
  6. Female, born 1801-1810 (Martha "Patsey" ~1808);
  7. Female, born 1801-1810 (Mary ~1810);
  8. Male, born 1811-1815 (Allen ~1814);
  9. Female, born 1811-1815 (Undetermined);
  10. Female, born 1816-1820 (Undetermined).

Other than Isaac, the only male Georges in north Georgia in 1830 and 1840 were Allen, Arthur, James, and Jesse. They were found in the same counties as Isaac or nearby and they were exactly the right ages to be Isaac's unnamed sons.

Martha "Patsey" is found marrying John B. Price 14 September 1826 in Rabun County, Georgia. Before 1840, the Price family moved to Cherokee County, where Isaac, Allen, and Jesse lived.

Research Notes

  • The Isaac George of Laurens County, South Carolina signed documents without a mark. The Isaac George of the Georgia land transactions seen above also signed without a mark.
  • Isaac is found in many trees with the middle name Winston. No evidence for that has been found. Every document for him shows his name as Isaac George. He signed as Isaac George. If there was an Isaac Winston George, this is not him.
  • Some trees show Isaac with a son named Thomas C. George, born in 1821. No evidence has been found for that and the 1830 census shows no males younger than 15 in Isaac's household. Thomas "Marmaduke" George was actually the son of Isaac's son Jesse.
  • Many trees show Isaac's wife as Frankey Henslee, having them marry 1805 in Caswell County, North Carolina on the Virginia border. However, Isaac was already in South Carolina by 1798 and his wife was Martha, not Frankey or Frances. There are numerous Marthas in succeeding generations, but no Frankeys or Franceses. Some Isaac George did marry Frankey Henslee 1805 in Caswell County, North Carolina, but it was not this one.[25]
  • Many trees show Isaac's wife as Martha Hambright, with no evidence. The only Hambright families found in South Carolina in the 1790 census were in York County, several counties away from where Isaac was living. These were Frederick Hambright and his son, Frederick Jr. Frederick Jr. was born in 1766; so, could not have been the father of Martha, who was born about 1775. Frederick Sr. was the only Hambright in South Carolina at the right time and of the right age to have been Martha's father. However, Frederick was a Revolutionary War patriot and officer at the Battle of Kings Mountain. His life has been thoroughly researched and there is an active descendants association which says Frederick had no children named Martha.
  • Martha Hambright has been disconnected as Isaac's wife, pending some evidence for it.

DNA

As of September 2025, only one of Isaac's male-line descendants has tested his yDNA and submitted it to the George DNA Project. Test 179217 in Lineage 1 of the George DNA Project is a near perfect match to numerous descendants of Nicholas George. No direct line has been developed, yet, between Isaac and Nicholas.

The only source here takes me to an Isaac Winston George whose parent's are unknown. Everything quickly researched points to the person from that Census being born in England and coming to the states as a teenager.

The issue is the connection with the father, Joseph, because this man listed only lived to be 5 years old...
