Biography
Giovanni or John was born in the 1880s to Vincenzo Ferraiolo and Caterina Campisano in San Pietro a Maida, Italy. On September 21st, 1907, he arrived in America. He married Assunta Zungrone in Philadelphia shortly thereafter and had a large family with her. He changed the family last name to "Ferriola" and it has been like that ever since.
After Assunta passed away in 1929, Giovanni married a woman named Florence in the city of Philadelphia in 1932 according to his naturalization papers and World War II draft card.
He passed away on August 22nd, 1944.
Research notes
There are several discrepancies regarding the date of Giovanni's birth.
- His ship manifest and death certificate connect him to his parents as does DNA. See below.
- His World War I draft card lists his date of birth as March 7th, 1891.
- Naturalization paper listed his date of birth as December 2nd, 1889 and lists his second wife.
- Old Man's draft card lists his date of birth as February 12th, 1889 and lists his second wife.
- Death certificate in Philadelphia, PA lists his birth date as September 2nd, 1892.
DNA
Paternal and maternal relationship are confirmed with an AncestryDNA test match between Nicolina Ferraiolo and her second cousin once removed. Their MRCAs are Vincenzo Ferraiolo and Caterina Campisano, the great-grandparents of Nicolina and the second great-grandparents of her second cousin once removed. Predicted relationship reported by AncestryDNA: 3rd to 4th cousins, based on sharing 134 cM across 7 segments; Confidence: Extremely High.
