At present, only cursory connections have been categorized, and the project is limited to the precise spelling Fann, but any who know of variants that led to the Fanns of colonial and pre-colonial Virginia and North Carolina are especially encouraged to work out those connections.

Direct Ancestors who Were Enslavers
Consistent with the goals of the US Black Heritage Project, and as a small measure of increasing reparative genealogy, Porter Fann is working on documenting his ancestors who enslaved African-Americans so that researchers on a given surname may better be able to make a connection to their ancestors. The present list is by no means comprehensive, but represents an effort to document ancestors of Porter Fann who pre-emancipation, enslaved persons for their labor.

Thanks so much for the reminder. Yes, I'm still interested in keeping active with Society of Friends, especially because I have some direct ancestors who were Quakers or need confirmation of that connection.
My personal goal is to at least check out my Quaker ancestors, maybe identifying collaterals who need profiles or MM (and applicable sources, migration) updates, and give a more comprehensive summary after reviewing them for MM categories.

My John Porter and Denson line was at Chuckatuck in Virginia, but I haven't 100% confirmed any MM affiliation in Sampson County, North Carolina; nevertheless, I am confident it is the same John Porter.
Funny, just before I got this question, I was browsing Quaker categories and could not find one to use (many were deemed too high level), to identify a comprehensive list of ancestors, cousins or connections. It seems the lowest level that could be used was at the MM level, which seriously hampers familial line migration analysis.
Bottom line is that my analysis is incomplete, but I also have a vague recollection of some connection with a line of Quakers in areas around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was a few years ago that I worked on those, so at the moment, the MM escapes me.
Suffice it to say that even the late generations who were Quaker kin are distant, but I do have some brick walls... so you never know what affiliations might emerge, and I am very curious to survey all connections.
My first personal encounter with Society of Friends to my recollection was an AFSC meeting that I think I received a mailer about in the early 90s. They had a great presentation about their efforts to help effect peace in the Middle East and their guest was the Palestinian priest and author of:
Chacour, Elias, and Mary E. Jensen. We Belong to the Land : The Story of a Palestinian Israeli Who Lives for Peace and Reconciliation. 1st ed. 1990. San Francisco, California: Harper SanFrancisco.
AND if you don't find the category for the MM you've got records for, let me know and I'll add it. (Or if you're really familiar/comfortable with creating categories, you could create it yourself; just be sure to add the appropriate next level up MM (not geo) category to any new MM category you create. And then remove the geo category from the profile.

From a quick look, I found no source for Barber. It would be appropriate to add a Research Note on her profile indicating that Barber is not documented as a name that she ever used, and for now to mark Barber as uncertain. And you can add {citation needed} with double brackets.
I'll see what else I might have, but I do not recall having added Barber in any of the profile name fields, I think it was pre-existing.

Oh my goodness! Thank you SO MUCH for the amazing contributions to the Galbreaths’ pages! I was excited to see them, as, between the time I posted them and a few years ago, I was stricken with a fairly debilitating disability, and pretty much ceased all genealogical efforts. I loved working on my tree, so you know how upsetting that was for me. You made my day, and thank you so much for that!
After reading your contributions I came here, and am incredibly impressed with your page. If I were more able, I’d cut and paste your format, titles, and headings, lol. It’s so well laid out, and, you’ve answered a few questions as well. The biggest being, how do I address recording both my Black ancestry and the family members who owned people without being an insensitive clod. It’s so important to have this shown, and to be able to considerately discuss them, but I was almost clueless. (If there have been lessons on how to do this I’m sad to have missed them. If there have not, maybe that’s a topic for consideration.)
I also enjoyed your listings/categories for relationships to Royalty, DNA Verified, and Notable Persons. And those you’re researching, too.
Anyway, again, thank-you for your contribution, not just to the Galbreaths, but to my further enlightenment. Also, can I add you as a Profile Manager to the pages you’ve improved? (OK, who am I kidding, my whole entire tree? xD xD xD)

Thanks for replying. Are you perhaps confusing connections and categories?
Your profile says you have almost 1,100 connections (links to other WikiTree profiles whether through descent or marriage), in fact you and I link through 25 different profiles via my White ancestors. Connections are generated automatically by the WikiTree software.
Categories have to be manually added to a profile and group profiles together which are linked to a particular occupation or geographic location or some other common characteristic. To find your connections in a particular category, you need to find a lower level category that contains some profiles and then use the "my connections" button to find any connection to the people in that category.

I think a disconnect occurs for many users and makers of profiles regarding the value of categorization, but I found at least one instance where a place name categorization was used (that appears to be a traditional name and which does not use Scotland as a suffix in the category), and the person was not captured as a member of Scotland categorization.
Knowing that I have ancestors who have not been categorized makes me want to stay on this project for a while.
Since I would have to run a special report to see if I a) created (and forgot to categorize) any Scotland profiles, or else where I b) reviewed a pre-existing one, suffice it to say that I am at a loss to say how many profiles I have worked on in the last year, at the moment.
For the coming year, I'm going to make a task list from Your Family List, but I fear it will be slow going as I am at a loss with the first profile that the list produced for Scotland: Appin, Highland, Scotland is listed as the birth location: no Appin, Highland category exists. From a quick Wikipedia review, it looks like it might need a category created for Appin, West Highland OR that it should be West Highland, Argyll and Bute (neither of which exist as categories).
Also, for one of my presumptive ancestors described on my profile, Alpin Dungal (MacEchdach) of Scotland (abt.0778-0834) - someone who I am not certified to work on - I note that Dál Riata is the only place related category for him: he does not show up in the Scotland-based My Connections.
I'll circle back if I find any activity in the last year using Ancestor Explorer.

I am wondering if we are connected through Herring/Whitfield lines? I have seen you post on a few of those profiles but it looks like we are distant cousins through an entirely different line. Do you have a connection to that branch?
Interestingly enough, however, a Benaph Herring is mentioned in her estate file, but I found no direct evidence that John Grady (abt.1738-abt.1776) and Patience Moore were Sarah's parents. So that it remains a brick wall.
I have some other Herring connections by marriage, but that may be all, except for a 17th cousin, Richard Herring (1726-1803), who on Ancestry shows as a 3rd cousin, 6x removed (have not worked out the proofs).

If I ever get to the point of knowing county-level family origins to a certainty, I will probably want to join that team. It is still early days for documenting many of my lines of descent, and even the William Fann named above is not 100% proven. If he is sufficiently proven as a connection, then it would be Sussex.
However, tradition would have me as a Porter, not a Fann, had a pivotal marriage occurred. The Porters in my line only go back as early as Virginia, as well (John Porter (abt.1720-abt.1796) -brick wall, as a small handful of John Porters were in likely locations at the same time).
I keep up with the Google groups mail and am always encouraged by the challenges and activities as a means to engage everyone in the project.

I'm trying to find the revolutionary war pension record for Pierce Godwin, which can lead to further connection, especially since one connection is now being removed.
Pierce was Solomon's son. It's odd that neither DAR nor SAR have a record on Pierce, but this and other record indexes seem to indicate that something exists:
- "United States Revolutionary War Pension Payment Ledgers, 1818-1872," database with images, FamilySearch: accessed 25 Feb 2022, Pierce Godwin, 04 Mar 1831; citing North Carolina, United States, NARA microfilm publication T718 (Washington DC: National Archives and Records Administration, 1962), roll 5; FHL microfilm 1,319,385.
Anyway, I have some indications that Pierce's downline exists on WikiTree so I'm hopeful to get a hold of the pension file as it likely will name his immediate family. For some reason, several records for Pierce that are showing up on Ancestry (mostly Columbus County, NC) are not showing up on FamilySearch...

I haven't been diligent in noting when a profile that I reviewed was a Scotland profile, so I'll work harder to make that easier to pick-up from reviewing my contributions feed going forward.
[Ancestor Explorer] has a Bio Text search capability, so I'm going to do a review of those profiles in which I am related to see if the Scotland sticker can be added and otherwise review these. That looks to be 41 profiles (from year 1500 to present century, of course).
This app, Check sticker compliance for descendants of specified ancestor provides the capability to put in one's WikiTree profile ID and get Ancestors for a specified location, so I'll take a look at those profiles, too (probably overlaps with the Bio Text Ancestor Explorer app results, though.
As to the questions:
- If you have not yet signed up to help on one of the project's teams, which team(s) would you be interested in joining? I don't know if I have affiliated with any team. Do you have one under which bio builders work?
- How often should we provide a Project Newsletter? At least quarterly sounds like the minimum.
- Have you participated in the Tartan Trail? If not, is this something you'd be interested in doing? No, but I did the England project Orphan Trail and also completed the Profile Improvement Project's Voyage.
- Do you have a question(s) that we could add to a Frequently Asked Questions page? Maybe some specificity on any parameters for the Scotland sticker: e.g., presumably applies to anyone who was born, lived or died in country; but also clarify for those who migrated whether both stickers are good to have or not.
- Any suggestions or ideas you have on ways to improve the Scotland Project in general. Seems that I used to get emails, but I don't recall any for quite some time, now... Just checked, and I'm not subscribed, so I'll follow-up on that.

- The North Carolina General Assembly (1784) formed Sampson from an area taken from neighboring Duplin County, citing wikipedia:Sampson_County,_North_Carolina#History
I do note that his burial place was Autryille and the source is FindAGrave: FindAGrave uses current place names, not the names at the time of the vital dates birth or death.
We also have the probate record that some have apparently reviewed(?), which would in fact place his death in Cumberland County.
Please note that the "Unsourced family tree handed down to" you is noted in the "Research Notes" section: if the material handed down to you includes sources specific to details, then we can construct a reference for placing citation(s) at the applicable data points.
I also notice that this is the only statement that gives him a middle name of George, except for the 1790 census record... I will see if we can match that record to his FamilySearch profile and improve the citation.
We should add these categorizations to his profile:
- Autryville, North Carolina
- Cumberland, North Carolina
and either tentatively re-mark his death location as Duplin, but if the probate record is a correct match, it should be Cumberland.

It’s kind of hard to choose between Colonial Virginia and North Carolina, as I have ancestors from both. Maybe given my level of experience, it would be better to just choose the Profile Improvement Team. At present, I have also loosely affiliated with the England Project’s Bio Builders team.

I'm pretty sure that I replied directly, if not, I am remiss.
I affiliated with England Project Bio Builders many months ago. I also took on A A Milne's 5-star needs (building out his ancestors), but also that and other profiles that I worked came under the English Authors team. I had started the 1500 pre-certification process, but that seems to have stalled since Vivienne left.

The <ref> and </ref> tags that surround the content of the footnote. The <references /> tag that you put at the bottom where the footnotes should be displayed. "See Sources for the full explanation." Scroll down to the section: "Embed them as references (footnotes)."
The value of this method is that it links facts to the sources you're citing. It takes some practice especially if you have a URL internet link to include. You can also create a naming reference if you have the same source used for facts in multiple places within the profile (or even across profiles, but that's way far advanced). I've worked on 1,000s of profiles and find inline sourcing the best way to identify references.
