Should this David Dalton's father be David Dalton, Sr?

No, John. The 1777 tax list for Pittsylvania County clearly lists David as son of John and there is only one David of this generation in Pittsylvania County VA. This David Dalton appears consistently in Pittsylvania County.

An added note. Although we have no Y-DNA from a proven descendant of this David Dalton, we do have Y-DNA from many descendants of David Dalton St. of Rutherford County NC. No one with his DNA match is proven in Pittsylvania County VA. The David Dalton Sr. you point to is Rutherford County David. Y-DNA also proves, by the way, that the David Sr. you point to is not the s/o Samuel Dalton who also has many descendants whose Y-DNA is in the Dalton America DNA Group. We only have DNA from one documented s/o Timothy Dalton "Sr." of Louisa County VA, but it does not match David Dalton Sr, of Rutherford County either. We do not know the father of this David Dalton Sr., but we know from Y-DNA that it is neither Samuel nor Timothy of Louisa.

Do we have actual DNA of his descendants, or do we have DNA of individuals claiming to be his descendants?

Also, just so you know, I'm related to this David Dalton by way of my fourth great-grandfather, Benjamin Dalton (1775 - 1848), but if this is not the right parent for Benjamin, please let me know. Thanks!

Upon deeper review of my research, I was in err in saying we did not have Y-DNA from descendants of the David of this profile. We in fact do. It does not match that of David Sr. of Rutherford NC. Also note my comment on the confusion of David Daltons of the earlier generation in the profile of David Dalton (Dalton-294) of Rutherford County NC.

Generally Y-DNA family studies rely on the veracity of the documentary genealogy of participants who are tested. One of the advantages of family groups, however, is that the larger number of descendants included in the family group study will generally confirm those genealogies or indicate problems in them. The five descendants of the David in this profile confirm their relationship to each other and thus support their common relationship to the David of this profile or others who share his Y-DNA pattern.

Unfortunately the genealogies of the David Daltons of Rutherford County NC and Pittsylvania County VA on Wikitree have never fully escaped the original Wikitree weakness: the importation of undocumented genealogies along with the documented ones.

The marriage and children listed here connected with Pittsylvania County VA do not belong to the David Dalton who married Sarah Robinson and went to NC. The Y-DNA of the Daltons in Pittsylvania County VA does not match the Y-DNA for the Daltons of Rutherford County. See https://daltondna.site/ResultsCharts.html. There is no documentation that this couple ever passed through Pittsylvania County.
