- DEATH OF MR. WILLIAM CUTHBERT.
- We regret to announce the death of Mr. William Cuthbert, J.P., of Beaufront Castle, near Hexham, which took place on the 29th ult. after a brief illness. The deceased gentleman, who was 65 years of age, was a staunch Conservative. In 1859, he contested the representation of Newcastle, on the occasion of the acceptance by the late Mr. Headlam of the office of Judge Advocate, but he received only 1,086 votes, while Mr. Headlam was returned with 2,158. Mr. Cuthbert was chairman of the Conservative Association for South Northumberland, and although he was abroad at the time of the late Parliamentary contest in that Division, he took a warm interest in it. He was chairman of the Hexham bench of magistrates, having been formally appointed to the office by his brother justices some eighteen months ago, although he had officiated in that capacity some three or four years previous to that time, having, after the lamented death of his predecessor, Sir Rowland Stanley Errington, Bart., Sandhoe House, taken the chair at the justices’ meeting in virtue of his seniority. He was also chairman of the Executive Committee of the Quarter Sessions under the Contagious (Animals) Diseases Act, a matter in which he took a very lively interest, and had recently been carrying on, very ably, a correspondence with the Privy Council with regard to cattle disease. For the past seven or eight years he has been chairman of the Tyne Salmon Conservancy Board, and devoted not a small amount of attention to salmon fishery matters. Mr. Cuthbert was at one time largely interested in glass works, and also lead works, on the banks of the Tyne, but we believe he withdrew from them some years ago. He was likewise largely interested in the Mickley Collieries. The deceased gentleman travelled on the Continent with his family from September of last year to June of the present year, principally for the benefit of one of the members of his family. Mr. Cuthbert took ill on the 17th ult., being laid up with a severe attack of gout, which was followed by congestion of the lungs, from which he never rallied. The deceased leaves a widow and five sons and six daughters, four of the latter being married. The married daughters are Lady Slade, Mrs. Green Wilkinson, Mrs. Arbuthnot, and Mrs. Percy Anderson. The eldest son, Mr. W. Cuthbert, and his wife, and also the third son, Mr. Richard Cuthbert, were at home at the time of their father’s death, but the second son, Mr. Sydney Cuthbert, is at Natal, in Africa, while the two youngest sons were at school in the south of England, and did not arrive at home until after the sad event.
