Biography
Sarah was born in Girvan on 2nd November 1850 and was baptised on 22nd December 1850. She was the daughter of Thomas Cuthbert and Janet Neill. [1]
In 1851 Sarah was 5 months old and living with her parents and siblings Mary, Thomas and Annabella. Margaret Cunningham, 17, who is described as a 'visitor' but was her cousin, was also present. [2]
In 1861 Sarah was 10 years old and employed as a cotton winder. She lived in Wilson Street, Girvan with her widowed mother and siblings Thomas, Mary, Jane and her cousin, Margaret Cunningham.[3]
In 1871 Sarah was 20 years old, a woolen weaver, living in Montgomerie Street, Girvan with her mother and sisters Annabella and Jane. [4]
By 1881 the family had moved from Girvan to Glasgow. Sarah was 29 years old and was emplyed as an upholsterer's sewer. She lived at 17 South St. Mungo Street in Calton, Glasgow with her mother and sister Jane. Also present was William John Cully aged 20, a clerk and native of Girvan, Ayrshire who boarded with them. In 1891 Sarah was 39 years old living at 31 Edmund Street , Dennistoun, Glasgow with her mother, niece Anna B Willis and lodgers William M Hatchwell and Wiliam M Cruishanks. [6]
On 26th April 1897 Sarah married Walter Kerr at 9 Seton Place, Glasgow. He was 53 years old, an engineer's patttern maker living at Church street, Stenhousmuir. He was the son of John Kerr, ironwork designer (dec) and Helen McVey (dec). The witnesses were David McGill and Agnes Cuthbert. [7]
By 1901, Sarah, 48, Walter and her mother, Janet, aged 81 years were living in Church Street, Stenhousemuir in the parish of Larbert, Stirlingshire. [8]
At some point after her mother's death in 1902, Sarah and Walter emigrated to the United States, to the same area as her niece, Annabella Willis and her family. Sarah died in Richmond, New York on 23rd May 1939 and was interred in the Morravian Cemetery, New Dorp, Richmond County, New York, United States of America. [9]
