Biography
Jane was born about 1789 in Ireland.[1]
Jane met and married George Waddy, a soldier in the 48th Northamptonshire Regiment of Foot that was stationed in Ireland in 1816. The regiment was posted to the Colony of New South Wales in 1817. Their children included:
- Amelia, born 1817 at sea, near Port Jackson, New South Wales, Australia.[2]
- John, born 1819
- Jane, born 1822 at Sarah Island, Macquarie Harbour, Tasmania, Australia, died aged 2, 1824 in India[3]
After spending time in Sydney, George was posted to Van Dieman's Land, where George he was storekeeper or quartermaster with the first contingent of soldiers and prisoners sent to establish the penal settlement on Sarah Island in Macquarie Harbour on the west cost of Tasmania. Their youngest daughter Jane was born on the Island.[4][5]
The Waddys left Hobart in 1824 with the 48th for service in India where sadly George and her youngest daughter Jane died four months after arrival.[6][7]
Jane arrived in Sydney in the Colony of New South Wales in Mary 1826, she had traveled from London via Cork.[8][9] Jane and her two children settled in Parramatta, NSW.[10]
Jane lived with her married daughter Amelia Shelley and her husband George at Tumut Plains, NSW about 1839.[11][12]
She passed away in 1853 in Tumut, NSW.
