Genealogical Interests
Communication Preferences: I am interested in communicating with cousins and anyone else with an interest in genealogy.
Here is my family tree.

Genealogical Interests
All things/people genealogical.
I love WikiTree because it celebrates our connectedness in the best way - our shared familytree! And collaboration just makes it so much more fun.
I've always loved history so I wasn't surprised when I was bitten by the genealogy bug.
I'd like to encourage anyone who wants to chat about our tree to contact me, I'm always available. I also love helping people, so if you have a question about how WikiTree works please don't be shy to reach out to me.
Projects that I'm currently busy with are:
- Cemeteries: Cato Ridge Lutheran Church and Cato Ridge Methodist Church
- Ambassadors
- South African Anglo Boer War 1899-1902
- South African Roots Project
- Mentors
- Cape Dutch Colony (1652-1806)
- PIP Voyage
- Profile Improvement Project
Free Space Profiles
Need some help creating Free Space Profiles? I totally love FSP's! This isn't an official WikiTree help page, just something that I threw together to help some people out. I figured that I'd try to spread the love of Free Space Profiles and would attempt to inspire you to create one for yourself. See my quick and easy Free Space Profile tutorial here.
My Biggest Brick Wall
Cormac
My greatest brick wall, and I wish I could just crack it a little is my Cormac branch. I can find no record of Robert Cormac before his marriage to Sarah Jane Campbell on 30 Jan 1891, his parents are both deceased by the time of this marriage and are named in the record.
His parents are again named in Robert's Death Notice. However, I have found no other records to back up this information. Roberts parents are named as George Cormac (Plate Layer) and Mary Fraser (formerly Cormac, born Stephens).
I have researched every Robert *corm* born between 1859 and 1862 in the statutory registers on scotlandspeople.gov.uk (there are 10), and he is not there. I can also find no record for a marriage between George *corm* and any Stephens or Stevens.
In the 1891 Scotland census Robert claims to have been born in Roslin, Midlothian, and according to the census, marriage, shiplist and death notice he was born in 1860-1861. He was also a widower at the time of his marriage to Sarah Jane Campbell in 1891, Coatbridge - residence Browns Building, Gartsherrie Road. In June/July 1891 Robert Cormac and Sarah Jane Campbell left Scotland and headed to South Africa aboard the Trojan.
An old family tale I was told a few times as a child was that Arthur David Cormac changed the family surname from Mc Cormack to Cormac when he immigrated to South Africa. I have been able to prove that Arthur was born in South Africa and had always carried the name Cormac, however I often find that family tales are like legends - rooted in truth but get distorted over time.
My grandfather Len Cormac (1936-2020) told me that when he was a young boy/man he would write to a cousin named Robert Watt in Scotland who was around the same age, Robert was the son of David and Helen Watt. I have a photo of David and Helen taken in about the early 1970's. This is the only clue that I have. Just a note that I'm not sure whether is relevant or not: a witness at Robert and Sarah's wedding was Robert Watt.
Any help on this tree would be greatly appreciated.

Have uploaded my Gedcom from My Heritage although my main tree is on FamSearch. How do you add the gedcom data to the tree on Wiki? Surely the gedcom data becomes the tree on Wiki? You don't have to add one by one do you?
Thank u kindly,
See you in the chat

Her mother was Catharina Lavia (born Fourie). The daughter should read as (born Holiday) married to Baker as you entered. How can we merge these 2. It will cause a problem as she is registered under Fourie.
She is one of the children in the Boer Concentration camp with her mother Catharina Lavia Holliday. Our line is through her first son born to Christina Maria Gertruida Noordman. Thanks Sue

Thank you so much for your email. I'm a new starter at family searching for the Barnes/Brown/Chirgwin/McCabe families. I started back in 2017 and decided to leave it for a while. It opens up a new world solving and searching for our ancestors. I just wish I'd asked my mother some more questions when I was younger. Once again, thank you kindly for your help. Yours sincerely Judi Barnes

It's so exciting as it sounds like you have made your first connections on WikiTree already, you must send a private message to the profile manager or place a public comment on the profiles of your great grandparents for him to see - he is also a descendant and I am sure he'll be over the moon to "meet" you too.
Another fantastic tool is the RootsSearch Tool, you'll find a clickable link at the bottom of the right hand column of any open profile.
My favourite thing of all about the profiles on WikiTree is the bio box - what a fantastic way to tell an ancestor's story.
Enjoy the rabbit hole, and holler if there's anything that I can do to help •*¨*.¸.•*¨*🐰
18 April 1843 – Deceased • G682-SDC born in Odanak Village or Ste Francis du Luc Yamaska Canada married a woman named Obeline Genest also Quebec or Odanak Village..her dob: est. 1855-1883 Here is where it gets thorny: Its listed as they had 6 children at least and one of the eldest was my great grandmother Sarana (Marie) deGonzague. That would be fine, except that all the records I can find (Heritage, Ancestry & Family Research- Geni say that the children are all hers including the ones born after she died which is at least 4 of them. Her mother is named: Scholastique Garneau (French) Loretteville Quebec and father: Joseph Genest 1835.
I found a marriage page for them and wonder if I can sent it to you somehow? Its all in the French language, (one paragraph and may clue us in to whether he married a 2nd time or if she is truly the mother of the 2 eldest after all. Please let me know, if you are interested or who else I might interest with helping me. The church record may be his baptism with his parents listed on it in French pg. 170 - Canada, Quebec Catholic P...rish Registers, 1621-1979 Saint-François-du-Lac Saint-François-du-Lac Baptêmes, mariages, sépultures 1836-1847 .... I know his father's name was also Jean "Baptiste" de Gonzague. thanks in advance, Deborah
I wish that I could help, but unfortunately I don't speak or read French, however an idea might be for you to upload the document here on Wikitree to your ancestors profile or to a Free Space Profile, then post a question in G2G (use great tags in the provided box, such as the surnames and "France" so that members of the France Project will be alerted to your question.) Put as much information as you can into the profiles and G2G post as you can. There is a separate field for you to paste in the URL of either the document/image, your ancestors profile, or the Free Space Profile, this way members can click the link to go straight where they need to.
If you need any help with this at all send me a private message.
The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing its first annual check-in with our project members. We are in the process of transitioning to a team structure. We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project and WikiTree. The Project’s mission is to:
- Make profiles beautiful! We clean up messy biography sections and sources, and try to set standards for attractive, useful, and well-written biographies, starting with those we manage.
We know you’re working on profiles *smile* We would like to hear about successes you’ve had toward the Project’s goals. We would also appreciate any feedback you might have to help us improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or privately via private message to either of us.
Sincerely,
Debi Hoag and Robin Shaules Co-Leaders, Profile Improvement Project
Thank you so much for the post and for the opportunity to be a part of the PIP Project 💚 I think the project is absolutely wonderful
My absolute pleasure, and thanks for the tip on variations of Cormac/k - when you add on the possibility of Mc/Mac, Cormic/k and all other versions it just gets crazy LOL - I sometimes think I'll never find my branches on that side...what I do know is that my direct ancestor left Scotland for South Africa in 1891 and have never found any siblings. I have some cousins would recently moved to Alaska!
I have learned a great deal and am really grateful for this early opportunity to learn the ropes and not pick up any bad habits - as I already have far too many of them!

I know how you feel, it can be a lot to take in when you're new to the site. The best thing is to take it slow, work on one family unit at at time. Explore the site, test everything out....you can't break it, and anything can can be undone (except merges, so always research and collaborate through any issues on those). Don't be shy, there are tons of people here willing to help if you just let them know you need it - the G2G is a super place to find them. I'm always here for you too, if you send me a private message I'll be able to respond via email, then you'll be able to email me anytime. You're never alone here 🦋

I think you've come to exactly where you want to be to accomplish this task. I never realised it at the time, but that was what I needed too when I first started out with genealogy. I created files...many of them, and filled them with notes of all the people in my tree, and other peoples tree's too so that I could compare branches to see if there were any matches. I still have those files today, I don't have the heart to throw all that work out. But now that I have started using WikiTree more I realised that I don't need those files anymore. Here at WikiTree I can link to any other webpages on the internet, I can cite sources that are in precious Family Bibles that great aunts hold onto dearly, I can upload treasured photo's or transcribe letters (adding photo's of them too). I don't have to worry about mould or fishmoths or sun fading..it's lovely!
Here's some links that I hope will prove handy for you:
- Uploading documents or images
- Free Space Profiles (I have used this option to create special pages for letters where I have transcribed them and added photo's of the letters)
- Adding links to other pages (either within WikiTree or externally on the web)
For privacy information see this page here: Privacy
I hope this helps!
Kindest regards, Pam
And then, coming to your page I can see lots of encouragement you give and helpful suggestions, like uploading documents and so on. So I just wanted to add my thanks to the pile :>) Laura James Sykes

I'm so glad that you decided to upgrade and join us here at WikiTree!
Both Family Tree Maker and Ancestry offer the option to download a gedcom, which you can upload here at WikiTree. But you will still need to do the gedcompare process where you will need to match or reject each profile to other possible matches of profiles already on WikiTree.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to copy WikiTree profiles info over to Family Tree Maker. I usually find opening each site on a separate browser tab and then copying and pasting works quite well.
There is an app called WikiTree Tool Kit which I think might be what you're looking for. If that doesn't help then perhaps searching for, or asking your question in our G2G chat forum will yield more results?
I hope this helps, and have fun!

I've just 'found' your reply, sorry. Even though Genealogist A. Scott Atkinson tried to prepare his class, inspire us to step up to WikiTree, assure us that this step was our best place to store our proven work, I admit to being overwhelmed. Thank you for that now valued 'Greeting.' I'm grateful for each and every helping hand! And I'm intrigued at your comments/request/command to have your work, at your demise, bequeathed to those named others......my goodness.....I had no thought to what happens to submissions upon the passing of the contributor. Where is that guidance? I didn't see anything of that ilk in the Tutorials.
WikiTree is known for having quite a learning curve, so don't feel alone there. I'm here for you any time (just send me a private message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can), there really are no silly questions!
That bit at the bottom of my bio is called an "Advance Directive" - you can read more about those here
There are loads of really great guides/help pages. They can be found in the little menu at the top right under the title "help" which can be found by hovering your mouse over that word. Then a drop down list appears where you can click on "help index" or "help category" depending on which layout you prefer.
Welcome to WikiTree Carol, I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do!
