Biography
Whilst I had dabbled in drawing family trees as a child, I became very interested in genealogy shortly after my Uncle Laurie died and I was given some old family research papers by my Uncle Johnny in about 2006. Laurie had begun researching the family back in the early 50's and had gathered a lot of data about the family in Australia and extended family members. My Uncle Lionel was also a great early influence. I can recall many experiences in my early childhood, tramping around grave sites looking for headstones of interest or significance, receiving great accolades for any discovery from Lionel.
I initially focussed on trying to find our overseas roots and my paternal line. I had some great discoveries including finding three brothers on my CASSIDY line all transported as convicts to Australia in 1830, including one escapee!! How exciting and how sad not to be able to share it with Laurie.
It was a long hard slog back then when we had to wade through microfilm and travel great distances to find material. How wonderful it is today that so much information is so readily available on the internet. You will see me in other places with the username genemonkey! How funny that I picked that name, I must have known that down the track I was going to develop an intense interest in DNA research. I took my first DNA test in 2010 and have found it a fascinating research tool and a great way to validate your paper research.
In 2011, I completed a Certificate in Genealogical Research with the Society of Australian Genealogists whilst I was living with my husband in remote parts of Australia: Katherine, Alice Springs and Darwin. My aim had been to start doing research for other people when my own tree was finished. How naive! Does it ever finish...it's a lifelong journey... and a great excuse for overseas travel!!
In 2013, I joined Wikitree! I've been a member of the Australia project since 2014 and appointed leader in 2015!
In 2015, as a member of the Society of Australian Genealogists, I started co-ordinating a DNA Research Group based in Sydney, to help increase my knowledge of the fascinating field of genetic genealogy.
In 2016, I was appointed as the co-administrator for the FTDNA Coats Surname Project, co-ordinating the Family Finder (autosomal) results for the project.
In 2017, at the Clan Gathering in Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Northern Ireland I was appointed as the DNA officer for the Cassidy Clan. Work is slowly progressing. During this trip to Ireland we had the privilege to go to the top of Belmore Mountain, the 'alleged' scene of the crime of our convict ancestors, which led to their transportation to Australia in 1830. The event was covered by the BBC, much to my surprise! You can see the video here. Please join our Facebook Group if you have tested your DNA and have an interest in the Cassidy's.
In late 2019, I took over the role of administrator for the FTDNA Cassidy Surname Project and also established the FTDNA 'Brittons of Ireland ' Project.
In 2020, I joined the FTDNA County Wexford Ireland Project as a co-administrator.
In 2021, I joined the FTDNA Courtney Surname Project as a co-administrator.
In 2022, I established an FTDNA project for Moyriesk and Rathclooney in County Clare and am the project administrator.
In 2023, I was appointed as a Fellow of the Society of Australian Genealogists, for my contributions in building the genetic research capability within the Society.
Ethnicity
My ethnicity estimate below has been calculated using my traditional research then confirming it through genetic research:
DNA Research Summary
I embarked on my DNA journey in late 2010. Since then I have been lucky enough to have had my mother and three of her siblings tested which has enabled me to utilise the Visual Phasing technique to be able to start to map my maternal segments back to my 4 maternal great grandparents. As far as my paternal side goes, I have limited testers to help me. I am an only child and have to go back to distant cousins on both my fathers maternal and paternal sides. Thank you to those who have helped me with this.

Our Australian Royalty
You may or not know that in Australia, having a convict in your ancestry is often referred to as 'Australian Royalty'! As part of the Australia project I have researched the convicts in our combined families and we are now up to 14! You can see a list of our convicts here.
Family Stories
- It was always said that we had a family connection to the famous 'Liberator of Ireland' Daniel O'Connell. After many years of research and with many thanks to my 6th cousin Liam, the connection has been found via my 4th great grand aunt daughter of Roe Swyny who married Maurice O'Connell in 1791. Maurice is a third cousin to Daniel O'Connell but an even closer relation to Daniels wife Mary O'Connell, who is his 1st cousin once removed. Whilst somewhat distant and only by marriage, I expect it is not surprising that at the time the connection would have been a very proud one to have for most Irishmen!
- Also said to be descended from Brian Boru on my mothers side; but isn't every Irishman!
Family Mysteries
- The DeLancy's and the DeLaundon's - still works in progress!
- Who is my paternal grandmothers father? A DNA research project. Which NOLL is it?
Blogs

Hope you are OK with the new sources I have added to Gertrude (Hurst) Hartley (1861-bef.1939). Her profile came up because you reference a site run by knightsure for her baptism. They clearly no longer have their genealogy section available (or I could not find it) I have found other sources which match.

Jules Harris (Kent Team)
We recently left a message on your profile to check in with the Profile Improvement Project (PIP). If you would like to continue with the Project, please let us know.
We would like to hear from you with any ideas or suggestions. If you do not wish to participate in the Project, please let us know. If we don’t hear from you within 14 days we will remove you from the Project, but we will welcome you back at any time.
Sincerely,
Debi Hoag and Kay Knight, Co-Leaders, Profile Improvement Project; Robin Shaules, Project Coordinator, Profile Improvement Project
The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing a check-in with project members. Please review the following and respond to let us know that you are content with your current team or if you would like to be more involved.
You're currently identified as a member of the Biography Team. The Biography Team works on profiles from their watchlist and other profiles that interest them.
There are currently three participant PIP Teams -- The Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and the Biography Team. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team.
Are you happy with the Team you are on? If you are interested in working with a different Team, please let us know.

You had left a comment on the profile for Patrick (Hines) Hynes (abt.1848-1908) asking if someone was able to sort these profiles, to let you know. I was working on the profile for John Hines (1863-1866) for the Australia Project Monthly Challenge, and believe I have managed to find enough information to confirm that they are at least 2 families.
I have created a new profile Patrick Hynes (abt.1836-1906) who was the husband of Ellen (Folen) and Bridget (Morriss), and father of John (above).
The original profile Patrick (Hines) Hynes (abt.1848-1908) now has more information in regards to his parents, a sister has been added, and I also have information to add for a brother ~ but the Genealogy SA website has gone done, so that is it for today!

Please respond before Sunday, 28th September, to the annual Ireland Project check-in :)
1. Would you like to remain a member of the Ireland Project? 2. If yes, are you happy in your current team(s)? Would you like to join another? 3. And finally, do you have any feedback on the Project's current work or suggestions for our future endeavours?
Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message. If we don’t hear from you before 28th September, we'll assume that you no longer wish to actively participate in the project, or that you no longer have the time to do so. You will, of course, be welcome to reapply for membership should your circumstances later change.
Thank you for all of your contributions to WikiTree and to the Ireland Project!
Feargal, on behalf of the Ireland Project Leadership.
Le gach dea-ghuí, Feargal.
It made me laugh at the irony when I recently found that according to my cinnection list we are 'cousins through marriage'! You and my husband are degrees from each other (though actually not related )(https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Connection&action=connect&person1Name=Ford-5759&person2Name=Coat-12&relation=0&ignoreIds=)
Thanks again Jon
Thank you for supporting the Categorization Project and our mission to manage the category hierarchy and encourage the use of categorization.
My name is Roy Walmsley. I’ve recently accepted the role of Categorization Project Leader. I’d like to say a little about myself first and then ask you to say a little about yourself, so that we can get to know each other.
Although I’ve not been a formal member of the Categorization Project (it has been closed for some time now) I have been working on categories for a few years now. I’m an active member of the England Project (I live in England) and have been involved with their Categories team for which I am currently a Co-Project Coordinator. I still love regular research and have a couple of small one name and one place studies.
You are listed as having the Categorization Badge. Are you still active in categories and do you want to continue with the project? Do you specialize in any category area or have any specific roles? More generally, are you actively involved in any other projects?
Please reply to this message by posting a reply below or by sending me a private message. I look forward to hearing from you. Also, please let us know if you have any feedback about the direction of the project.
Thank you!
Roy Walmsley, Categorization Project Leader

If I have made a mistake and you are an immediate family member, which WikiTree identifies for these purposes as a spouse, child, grandchild, parent, grandparent, sibling, niece, nephew, aunt, uncle, or first cousin, then please let me know and I will return you to the trusted list.
Thank you for your interest in this profile and your work on WikiTree.

Once again it is time for our annual Ireland Project check-in.
1. Would you like to continue as a member of the project?
2. Do you have any suggestions for project priorities in the next year?
3. Do you have any interest in taking a more active role in the project and, if so, what might you be interested in doing?
A response to the check-in is one of the project’s few requirements for all members. Please either post a reply below or send me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you, we’ll assume your interests have changed and you no longer have time to participate in the project.

I'm contacting you for the annual ANZACS Project membership checkin. We really appreciate your involvement in the Project in the last year. Thank you so much for all your help to improve profiles of ANZACs on WikiTree.
Please could you reply to this profile comment, or send me a private message to let me know if you'd like to stay on in the Project, and if so, what ANZACs activity you're planning to work on over the coming year. There are some ideas for activities on this page - Project:Anzacs. You could also add or update your entry on the 'Project Members and what we are doing' heading on that page.
If you've moved on to other things for the moment, that's absolutely fine. We'd appreciate if you'd let us know so that we can remove you as a member of the Project.
The ANZACs Project is a sub-project of the Military and War Project, which has a channel on Discord. If you're not on Discord yet, here's some information - Help:Discord. It's a great way to communicate with other members of the Project and help each other out.
We're always happy to receive any ideas or suggestions that you have to make our project even better.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

It is once again time for our annual Ireland Project check-in. Please respond within the next three weeks to let us know:
- If you would like to continue as an Ireland Project member. If your answer is yes, please tell us if you are happy with your current team, or if you would prefer to join a different one. If you are currently participating in more than one team we would appreciate you ranking them in their order of importance to you, from highest priority to lowest. This information will be helpful as we consider possible future changes to our team structure.
- In the past, the project has had a very minimal membership requirement (one contribution per year) for badged members to meet. Do you believe this is adequate, or should this requirement be increased? What do you believe would be a reasonable commitment to expect from all project members?
- How active have you been in the Ireland Project over the past year? Please choose one of the following options: a) I normally spend 1-5 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. b) I normally spend 6-10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. c) I spend over 10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. d) I am not able to contribute every month but have spent approximately ________ hours during the past year improving Irish profiles.
- Please provide feedback on any things you’d like to see the project do more of in the future.
You can respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within the next three weeks we’ll assume your interests have changed or you no longer are able to participate in the Ireland Project at this time, and your badge will be removed. If your circumstances change later you will be welcome to reapply for membership.
Many thanks for all that so many of you have contributed to the project in the past year, and very special thanks to those who answered the project’s call and gave generously of their time to be part of Team Seanchaithe during the most recent connect-a-thon. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

My full biological brother John P. Webster's Y-DNA is J-CTS5368. He (and I) are also a direct descendant of Gov. John Webster of CT. These groups are both J but I have no idea if the two are related at all. Perhaps you can help. Is there a DNA study for Gov John Webster or CT Websters?
The Appreciation Team Leaders are completing the six-month check in with all team members. Thank you for all your work thanking and appreciating WikiTree members.

Thank you for your participation in October 2020’s Source-a-thon. Your contributions helped us to clear over 57,000 profiles that needed sourcing. This makes our Shared Tree all that much better.
Keep up the great work!

Thanks for all the work you accomplished during our Connect-A-Thon 2020. It is amazing how many more profiles were created and added to our Shared Tree. You have every right to be pleased with your efforts!
Kind regards,
Pippin Sheppard ~ WikiTree’s Appreciation Team
The duration of Colony of New South Wales extends from 1788 to 1900, and I would assume that all of the families would have actually been born in the Colony after the initial arrival of the family immigrants to Australia!!!

I am laughing so much, now, because I forgot WHY I asked the question in the first place!!!
However, I will remember that it is the time until and up to Federation!

The Global Cemeteries Project is currently undergoing our member check-in and wanted to verify that you are still active and interested in being a member of the project. Are you currently assigned to or working with one of our Cemetery Teams? If not, is there a particular Team or area you are interested in participating with? I would be delighted to help you get setup in one or more of our collaborative teams!
We use Google Groups for internal project collaboration, so if you are not yet setup for access feel free to submit a join request and we will get that approved as quick as possible. We also ask that members check their followed tags to make sure you are following the correct project tag (CEMETERIES) so you don't miss any discussions in G2G.
Last, but not least, we would like to thank you for all of your contributions to WikiTree and let you know that any ideas or suggestions for improvement you may have for the Global Cemeteries Project would greatly appreciated!
I look forward to hearing form you soon!

I am interested to connect up with someone who is exploring Ann Forbes' DNA. Would this be yourself, or is there someone else who has taken this on? I have 6 family members connected to a cluster of Ann Forbes descendants (29 Ancestry matches). However, Ann is not our direct ancestor, and the connection is back a bit further....somewhere. Who would be interested to look at this further? Cheers Karen
I commented about my perception that individual profiles should only be linked to the lowest category possible. I agree with only attaching individual to the lowest category possible. However, in my family. pushing down to townlands actually hides the relationships with family inside the same county.
I noticed that you have a fair few convict ancestors (Australian Royalty) as you put it, I also have 6 convict ancestors and one female ancestor that I suspect got sent out as a orphan poor house girl, Christian Gallagher who I have no idea how she came to be in Australia pre 1850.
Anyhow, thanks for your good work. Mark H.
Re Irish Townlands. I've joined the Irish Project and noticed your interests in co. Fermanagh. I don't share your enthusiasm for creating categories down to Townlands. I think the collections are too small. I'm looking for family connections in co. Cavan. I've identified family in 4 different townlands. The most useful category to collect them together is a Barony, but I'm happy with civil Parish. Regards, Steve.
We are sorry to lose you as a member of the Connectors Project, but we understand that life gets busy and interests shift. Please know that you will always be welcome to rejoin the project in the future if you wish.
Thank you so much for your participation; we genuinely appreciate it.
