Biography

Alexander was born in 1726. He is the son of James Buchanan and Martha Allison. He passed away in 1798. [1] He never married and had no known offspring.

Served as a lieutenant in 1753/54 and as a sergeant under Capt. William Preston in the French and Indian War in 1755/56 and received land for his service.

In 1763, Alexander and three other Buchanan men from southwest Virginia (Archibald, Alexander Sr., and John) received land grants for service in the French and Indian Wars.[2]

In January 1777, Alexander Buchanan was mentioned in the minutes of the first court of the newly formed Washington County in southwest Virginia (which covered a much larger area than it currently does).[3]

In April 1780, several Buchanan men proved to the court of Montgomery County, Virginia, that they were entitled to land for their military service. James Buchanan, heir-at-law of Colonel John Buchanan, was to receive 3,000 acres. The others, who served on the "Frontiers of Augusta" in 1755 and 1756, were Archibald Buchanan, Sergeant; Alexander Buchanan, Sergeant; Alexander Buchanan heir-at-law of James Buchanan, subaltern; and Robert Buchanan, soldier.[4]

In May 1780, Alexander Buchanan proved to the Montgomery County Court that he was a Lieutenant in the First Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel Washington.[5]

On September 26, 1786, the Montgomery County Court recommended that he be appointed a Justice of the Peace. [6] On May 25, 1790, the Wythe County Court, at its first meeting since the the county was formed from part of Montgomery County, recommended he be appointed a militia lieutenant. [7]

In his will, dated 6 November 1798 and recorded 11 December 1798 Wythe County, he left his estate, including a half interest in a 525 acre parcel in Mercer County, Kentucky, to his brother, Robert, and Robert's children, Alexander, John, William and Polly.[8] [9]
