Biography
George was born to his parents, Isaac Brown and Lucetta Browning on the 12th of June 1845 in Cuyler, New York.[1] [2] [3]
George was raised on the family farm in Cuyler, where he, his siblings and parents were enumerated both in New York State censuses and the United States Census.
- In 1850, the US Census records the family consisting of Isaac, his wife Lucetta and sons De Forest and George along with Isaac's sister Adella at Truxton, Cortland County. [4]
- In 1855, New York enumerated the family at Truxton where the family now included two new sons, Isaac who was 3 and Wesley who was listed as being 7 months old, an adopted daughter Betsey Bengle who was 9. Adella, George's aunt was still living with the family. [5]
- In 1860, family was enumerated at Cuyler in Cortland county. Adella is still living with the family but the adopted daughter Betsey Bengle is no longer with the family. Perhaps she had left to be married (though she would have been 14 during the census) or perhaps she has died. [6]
- In 1865 the family was again enumerated in Cuyler but the family had changed quite dramatically. Lucetta has passed in 1864 and Isaac had married Olive Sally Norton who had brought with her, her two children from a previous marriage of Charles and Frances are also enumerated with the family. Adella is no longer with the family. [7]
In 1866 George married Celestia A Hills, and they had 7 children, 6 of whom lived to adulthood.[8] He worked as a farmer, eventually owning his farm outright, which was known as the George Brown farm even after he had retired.
He passed away on 14 Feb 1922 [9] and was buried at the Hillcrest Cemetery in DeRuyter, Madison County, New York. [10]
