Biography
Jane or Joan Brereton[1] was born circa 1454.
She was the daughter of Sir William Brereton of Brereton, Cheshire, Knt,[1] [2] and his wife, Philippa Hulse.[3] Philippa was the daughter of Sir Hugh and sister of Thomas Hulse.[3]
She was married to Richard Cotton of Hamstale,[2] or Cotton, esq.[1] He was the son of John Cotton of Ridware Hemstall and his first wife, Mary, daughter of Ralph Poole of Radborne.[4] [2] Helsby says he was the son of Richard de Coton, esq, querying whether Richard the father was of Hampstall Rydware and his wife was Margaret Clerk, to whom he was married by licence dated 21 November, 1455.[1]
Jane and Richard had children:
- Thomas Cotton, esq, son and heir, married Katherine,[2] he was aged 19 in 19 Henry VII, Inquisition post mortem 21 Henry VII;[1]
- Maude Cotton, sister and coheir, was married to Sir Anthony Fitzherbert of Norbury, Knt,[2] Matild was aged 30 in 9 Henry VIII[1] which was 22 April, 1517-21 April, 1518;
- Eleanor Cotton, sister and coheir, was married to Sir William Venables, Baron of Kinderton,[2] Eleanor was aged 28 years in 9 Henry VIII;[1]
- Katherine Cotton, sister and coheir, was married to Sir Richard Grosvenor of Eaton,[2] her husband was an esquire not a knight, and she was aged 27 years in 9 Henry VIII;[1] and
- Isabella Cotton, sister and coheir, was married to 1) Sir John Bradburn of Bradburn of the Lea,[2] or Darley, and 2) William Basset of Blore, she was aged 24 years in 9 Henry VIII.[1]
Her husband, Richard, was living in 1 Richard III [26 June 1483-25 June 1484] and died in 12 Henry VII[2] which was from 22 August, 1496, until 21 August, 1497.
Jane died on 30 April, 9 Henry VIII [1517] and an inquisition post mortem was held that same year.[1]
Research Notes
A website with online trees and genealogical information, considered by WikiTree to be an unreliable source for pre-1700 profiles, claims Jane or Joan Brereton was born at Brereton, Staffordshire, England. This is an error. Her father was William Brereton of Brereton in Cheshire,[1] not Staffordshire.
A previous editor cited "Wallop Family, p. 136" as the source of the information Jane "was born circa 1454 at of Brereton, Staffordshire, England." However, in that book Watney mentions neither Jane's year nor place of birth.[5]
