Birth: Cornelius Osterhaut Beesimer was born July 23, 1806 in Accord, Rochester, Ulster County, New York. ^[1] He is the son of Casparus Besimer, Jr. and Janneke Osterhoudt.

Marriage: He married Maria Catharine Vandemark about 1828.^{[citation needed]}

The 1855 New York State Census, shows Cornelius and Maria in Rockland, Sullivan County, New York. It also indicates that Cornelius and Maria were born in Ulster County but that their son, Dubois, born 25 years earlier, in, roughly, 1830, was born in Sullivan County. ^[2] And, in fact, Cornelius can be found , in Rockland, on the 1830 U. S. Census, with a male child under the age of 5. ^[3] Sullivan County, New York, was formed from Ulster County. It can be surmised that after Cornelius and Maria married, they traveled to Sullivan County which is less than an hour west.

Research Notes

At first there was some confusion in that the Cornelius Besimer, baptized in Ulster County was not the Cornelius Beesimer who lived in Sullivan County but following the censuses seems to settle that question.

NOTE: The birth citation contains incorrect information. The birth/baptism place is transcribed as Rochester (Accord), Monroe (County), NY and has been left as found. However, the Rochester indicated, Accord, is in Ulster County, not Monroe County. This has been reported to Ancestry.

There are between 42 and 52 variant spellings for this surname, including for each individual. It is not the same surname as Bessemer, the steel making family. The name is pronounced Bees mer or Bees eh mer and those 2 pronunciations are commonly alternated by individuals in the family.
