Probate Inventory
William Baynard died intestate.[7] Letters of Administration were granted to Thomas Baynard and Ephraim Mikell and the Inventory of his estate was made in March of 1803, with an appraisal: Personal, $43,843.15 + $8,483.78. / William Baynard's Inventory made March 1, 1803 shows an appraisal of his Goods and Chattels of $52,326.93 which included 51 adult slaves and 30 children valued at $31,160 in bonds and notes for money loaned at an interest to "friends and neighbors" of $8,483.78. Several items beyond the usual list of horses, cattle, hogs, sheep, poultry, goats, cotton gin, writing chair, Chase, plantation tools, carpenter tools, cotton and provisions, rum, Brandy, wine, loaf sugar, rice, etc. seem to be of more than passing interest in what seemed to suggest besides having been a "moneylender," he was probably a manufacture and supplier of building and farm needs in the listing of 1400 cypress shingles, 5500 bricks and 6 1/2 dozen hoes. *** Buried in the Presbyterian church yard, Edisto Island, his tombstone inscription reads: In Memoriam / of Mr. William Baynard / who departed this life / June 12, 1802 / Aged 36 years 5 months / and 27 days. Time how short, Eternity how long / His short life was with every virtue blessed. / His remains lie here, his soul at rest. // Sarah Black, the first wife of William Baynard, was probably buried in Beaufort as there is no record of her burial in either the Presbyterian or the Episcopal Church Yards of Edisto Island unless she was buried in the Baynard Family Cemetery on Edisto Island. // Elizabeth Mikell, the second wife of William Baynard, married second Mungo Mackay and is buried in the Edward Whaley enclosure of the Presbyterian Church Yard, Edisto Island. Her inscription reads: To the memory of / Mrs. Elizabeth Mackay / Daughter of / Ephraim and Mary Ann Mikell / who departed this life / on the 19th of February 1815 / In the 42nd year of her age / The record of her worth / Is in the Memory of her surviving friends.[8]
