Biography
John Calder Baynard was the son of Thomas Baynard and Sarah Calder of Edisto Island, South Carolina.
Property
There is a deed which states he was to receive some land (Little Edisto) from his father's estate, but by the time of his death he had not received it yet. The deed stated that William G. Baynard purchased the 282 acres of land, the Little Edisto property.[1]
It is possible he inherited the Baynard's Old Place Plantation from his father Thomas Baynard.
Death
John C. Baynard "became of unsound mind and died".[1] About 1817, a couple of years after John turned age 21, he began having mental health issues. "His intellect became much impared that his brother found it expedient to send him to an asylum at Philadelphia, at which place he remained a confirmed lunatic, from the year 1817 until the past September (1838) when he departed this life intestate and unmarried." [2]
He was deceased by Dec 1838, when his probate inventory was filed.[3]
Slaves
John C. Baynard was a slaveholder. His probate inventory named and valued each of the enslaved after his death.[3]
