Mary Bastable (1869 - 1898)

Biography

Mary Bastable was born in 1869. She was the daughter of Charles Walter Bastable and Eliza Matilda Waller.

In the 1871 Census of Canada, Mary Bastable (aged 2) was recorded living with her father Charles Bastable (36, a School Master), her mother Eliza Bastable (34) and her siblings Harriet Bastable (7), Edmond Bastable (8), Adeleide Bastable (6), Eliza Bastable (5), Selina Bastable (3) and Arthur Bastable (1) at St Jean, Quebec^[1].

Her father Charles passed away on 16 July 1878.

In the 1881 Canada Census, Mary Bastable (aged 12) was recorded living with her widowed mother Matilda Bastable (45) and her siblings Louisa Bastable (aged 19), Edmund Bastable (17), Ada Bastable (16), Lillie Bastable (14), Selina Bastable (13) and Arthur Bastable (9) at Montreal City, Quebec. Also in the household was William Murduck (15)^[2].

Mary Bastable passed away on 20 June 1898, found drowned in the river St. Lawrence at Portneuf, Quebec^[3]. She was buried on 24 June 1898 at Saint Stephen's Anglican Church Cemetery, Lachine, Montreal Region, Quebec, Canada^[4].
