Genealogy

My exposure to Awbrey family history began in the 1960s when an aunt and some cousins held several family reunions.

My active interest in Awbrey family history became in 2014. For several years I had been interested in my wife's research on her Martin and Dooley family genealogy. This included visits to various locations in the U.S. and to Gien, France where her great-great grandfather lived while a member of the French General Assembly.

While planning a trip to Bristol, England in 2014, for more Martin family research, we decided to visit Brecon, Wales, the location of ancient Awbrey ancestors.

Visits To Wales

That first visit was revealing. I visited Awbrey related sites including Abercynrig Estate near Brecon, St. Ellwy's Church at Llanelieu, and Christ College and Brecon Cathedral in Brecon. There was much I did not know about the family at that time.

In 2016, a second visit to Brecon and surrounding areas were much more productive due to research that had previously been done. Visits to additional sites and buildings related to the family were made.

In 2018, a third visit to Brecon was made with my wife, cousin Liz Shifflett, cousin Lauryn Awbrey Maclure and husband Neil. Each of the cousins are descended from emigrant John Awbrey. We stayed a week in the ancient seat of the Awbreys - Abercynrig Manor House and Estate, Brecknockshire, Wales. Visits were made to Awbrey family related sites: Christ College, Brecon, Brecon Cathedral, Llanelieu Court, St. Ellwy’s Church, Tredomen, Tretower, Cantref, Crickhowell. Often we were searching the parish churches for Awbrey memorials.

As I carried out all of my research into my Fletcher/Stock family trees over five years ago it may take me some time to get back into the swing of importing information. I did most of my research using the Genesunited website and ended up with a family tree with over 2000 individuals, but unfortuneately didn't record as many sources as I should have done! Having said that I didn't have a lot of feedback pointing out any glaring errors.

Are you considering using the GEDCOM process to transfer your family tree to WikiTree? See: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:GEDCOM

Not sure exactly how it works but possibly you could move them in smaller groups as opposed to all at once.

WikiTree wants good sources on all profiles. There are strict requirements for profiles on people born prior to 1700.

Read the Help pages on the link in the message posted on your profile.

Good luck.

Hello Stuart,

Thank you for supporting the Categorization Project and our mission to manage the category hierarchy and encourage the use of categorization.

My name is Roy Walmsley. I’ve recently accepted the role of Categorization Project Leader. I’d like to say a little about myself first and then ask you to say a little about yourself, so that we can get to know each other.

Although I’ve not been a formal member of the Categorization Project (it has been closed for some time now) I have been working on categories for a few years now. I’m an active member of the England Project (I live in England) and have been involved with their Categories team for which I am currently a Co-Project Coordinator. I still love regular research and have a couple of small one name and one place studies.

You are listed as having the Categorization Badge. Are you still active in categories and do you want to continue with the project? Do you specialize in any category area or have any specific roles? More generally, are you actively involved in any other projects?

Please reply to this message by posting a reply below or by sending me a private message. I look forward to hearing from you. Also, please let us know if you have any feedback about the direction of the project.

Thank you!

Have you seen the book, Abercrynrig. A brief account of the origin and growth of a Breconshire Estate by J Jones Davies?

I have also seen some updates to the Powys online databases. I began to search yesterday, there is a great amount of information on most of families in Brecon. I'm think I found some more information on the Burghills, they were another compainon of Newmarche. Newmarche was a border baron in Normandy, so it kinds of makes sense for William the Conquouer to appoint him to the Welsh boarder in the same role. I've found 3 families in proximity to Newmarche lands in Normandy.

Yes, I bought a copy at the library in Brecon during our first visit in 2014.

My research over the years leads me to the conclusion that the description of the origin of the Aubreys in this area is not correct.

The book makes reference to Dr William's inquisition. Remember there are two links for it from his profile.

It will be interesting to see what you find on the Powys databases.

The database here is what i recently found going through the Brecon Museum website. I have been using Vol. #30 because its the index of all the volumes prior to it.

https://journals.library.wales/view/1380216/1385120/78#?xywh=264%2C1838%2C3018%2C1936&cv=78

The Awbrey's were staunch Royalist , even after they moved to America and even then relied heavily on there connections to secure grants in the northern Neck, although it seemed Francis was well connected to the current gentry class at the time. The one key piece of evidence for a Norman/Royalist origin is the David Gam connectection. His crest remainings within the Aubrey shield well after the events of the War, indicating to me that they also wanted to present themselves as Royalist as well. The intermarrying amounst the other campaign families of the pacification over Brecon would also indicated to me of trying consolidate and remain in power. Unfortunately Newmarche's son was disavowed and the De Bohan took over then the Herberts. It appears that the other Norman families that allied with Newmarche, took a step back as the Walbeffoe's , Burghills and Gunters as well.

Good to hear from you Cole,

A coincidence - while searching for a profile today I came across one you created - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Aubrey-934. I typically click on WT Sourcer to see if additional sources are available. In this case Ancestry has some. Do you want to update it?

Several times I have thought about contacting you regarding updating the Aubrey/Awbrey Name Study but something always comes up. For example, I am no longer sure about the Normans being the source of our surname in Normandy. New information is the Alberics were prominent in Northern Italy going really far back. The Normans used the Teutonic language which came from ancient Germany. So, the Alberic name is in both locations. Or, the Alberic/Aubreys came into Northern France directly from Germany.

Also, we have a very active cousin who lives in Oxford who has data on numerous Aubreys. His sources seem valid but are not readily accessible to me. Problem is he will sometimes send 3 or 4 long messages a day. I don't have that much time. And, he has discovered yet another variation of the name. So far, it looks accurate that we have a line named Heuberry (I may not have the spelling just right).

How is it going with you?

My thought patterned has been set around Newmarche and his company of knights he brought along with him. I have found that some knights resided nearby Bernards Norman land. There is also 3 St.Albin villages nearby Newmarche as well. The one that stands out to me is St. Albin-en-Bray. When I say it out loud I could see how it could be heard as St. Awbrey. Who knows? Its interesting to think about.

Not able to invest a lot of time on research this year but i plan on trying to get back into it soon.

Your Hubery name study is really interesting.

The Obray spelling first appeared on a DNA test of mine done some time ago. Some years after that I was contacted by a cousin, a professional genealogist in Englnad, who explained how the name came about. A relative of his from Glamorgan joined the Royal Navy. For whatever reason he was registered as Obra instead of Aubrey. At some point later this line added the y to the name. Some of them ended up in Kent. Some of that group became Mormons. Some of the Mormons came to the U.S. One of that group later moved to Utah and was a high priest in that church.

I wonder if there is any connection to the Aubrey/Awbreys of New England about which I know nothing?

Hello,

I am checking in on behalf of the 1776 Project to announce the new project membership requirements and to verify that you are still interested in being a member of the project. All project members are being asked to join one of the project teams and also to make at least one project contribution every 6 months. We are also asking all project members to join the project's Google Group for project communications.

If you are interested in remaining with the Project, please reply to this comment or send me a message, request to join the Google Group, and let us know what team you would like to participate on.

We really appreciate your contributions on WikiTree, and thank you for all your hard work. If you have any questions, please ask. We would also love to hear any feedback you may have for the project.

If we don't hear back from you we will assume that you no longer wish to participate in the project and if so, you could rejoin at any time as is convenient for you.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!

SJ - 1776 Project Leader

Hi Stuart, I wanted to take the opportunity while doing the check-ins to publicly thank you for the enormous amount of work you have put into the Wales Project over the years. We wouldn't have a project without you. You are amazing. I am really looking forward to working with you as PC for Membership and seeing what the next six months have in store for us. Thanks for all you do, Olivia :-)

Hi, Stuart

The Ambassadors project has been reorganizing and is looking for those who have a membership at a genealogical society, to help in spreading the word about WikiTree.

We're working on ways to improve how WikiTree connects and interacts with genealogical and local history societies. This is the kind of thing we want to do:

  • Liaise with societies: set up your local society with a free-space page and some WikiTree materials as part of a package.
  • Use social media to promote what societies are offering on WikiTree.
  • Encourage bloggers to blog about societies and the resources available to them on WikiTree.

Are you interested in participating in some way? Do you have some ideas to share?

Azure Rae ~ co-Leader of Ambassadors Project

You can click on Ancestors to the right of my name to see the whole family tree. Mary is the daughter of the 6th Bnt - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Aubrey-401

Another shortcut I sometimes use when I know a name, such as Samuel Whitcombe, is to do a Google of "wikitree followed by the name I am looking for. Usually it will give you the link to the WikiTree profile.

If you are interested in the origin of the Aubrey/Awbrey name, check out this link - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Awbrey_Name_Study

Let me know if I can be of any assistance in your research.

Interesting! When I was a kid my friends and siblings and I played inside the bunkers at an abandoned Nike-Hercules missile site. When we were teens we played paint-ball guns in and around the bunkers. Some of those went many floors underground.

Thanks Stuart, for the note about the Flags of Texas. It was a space page used for US Southern Colonies Nueva Espana, Texas and is linked there for the Texas space page.. However since you brought it up, I also listed it on Texas project.

As I write, I see you were born- Kingsville, moved to Austin, then later to San Antonio. Business degree at A&M.

Would you like for me to list you as a member of the Texas project?
