parliamentary group leader
[edit]| Description | the identity of the leader of a parliamentary group |
|---|---|
| Represents | political party (Q7278) |
| Data type | Item |
| Domain | human (Q5) |
| Example 1 | parliamentary group leader→Democrats 66 (Q747910) |

| Example 3 | parliamentary group leader→European Green Party (Q950179) |
| Allowed values | human (Q5) |
| Planned use | The proposed property concerns political parties. There are several properties for party leadership, such as founder, chairperson, secretary-general, but no direct link to the leadership in parliament (and parties do not always have a parliamentary group as a separate entity to which the person could be assigned as leader) |
Motivation
[edit]Often working on political parties and received requests to have this field added so that it could be grabbed by Module:European and national party data. Julius Schwarz (talk) 11:39, 19 November 2025 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- This property appears to me as a “duplication”. Often, parliamentary groups have separate data objects from the parties. For example, the parliamentary group of NEOS – The New Austria (Q13564543) has with NEOS Parliamentary Group (Q37994797) its own data object. I have since added the chairpersons to that object via the property chairperson (P488). Furthermore, there are also parties that do not have their own parliamentary group, but form a parliamentary group with several other parties. For example, European Green Party (Q950179) forms the The Greens–European Free Alliance (Q751935) in the European Parliament with European Free Alliance (Q639383). Should the same parliamentary group leader then be inserted into both data objects? So currently I would vote with
Contra. --Gymnicus (talk) 21:34, 19 November 2025 (UTC)
- Interesting! But if that's the case, shouldn't number of seats in assembly (P1410) be used on the parliamentary group items as well, instead of the party? Dajasj (talk) 07:00, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
- Although I do wonder whether the use of parliamentary group (P4100) is correct on NEOS – The New Austria (Q13564543), because the description reads "parliamentary group to which a member of a parliament belongs". Dajasj (talk) 07:13, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
- Your last point is actually what this would be for. The idea is not always to have the chairperson of the parliamentary group, but the party's own leader in parliament. My understanding is that either the party's MPs/MEPs are the same the parliamentary group's composition and then the chairperson of the group is the party's parliamentary leader; or the party teams up with other parties in a group, and then each party has a lead MP/MEP that may not be the parliamentary group chairperson. Julius Schwarz (talk) 08:13, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
- Ah, okay. I know Germany best, so I'd take the CDU/CSU Bundestag fraction (Q1023134) as an example, which is formed by the Christian Democratic Union (Q49762) and the Christian Social Union of Bavaria (Q49763). In the CDU's data object, you would add Jens Spahn (Q86294) as the parliamentary group leader, and in the CSU's data object, you would add Alexander Hoffmann (Q15782242), who is the chairman of the Q1024443. Is that correct so far? --Gymnicus (talk) 10:01, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
- That seems right, yes. I mean, I do see how this can overlap with the existing position of "chairperson" at the item of the parliamentary group, but I do think the overlap is not complete, meaning that this is still a relevant property. Julius Schwarz (talk) 16:16, 20 November 2025 (UTC)

Oppose given the prior opposition to a similar proposal I made for election candidates: Wikidata:Property proposal/candidate name string. I do think "stated as" as a qualifier to a somevalue (unknown value) statement should be enough. Mahir256 (talk) 18:55, 28 November 2025 (UTC)
- There was also Wikidata:Property proposal/translator name string, rejected for similar reasons. Mahir256 (talk) 17:18, 29 November 2025 (UTC)
Oppose GZWDer's response is ok for me, or just qualifier P2561. Although I think if a person are enough important to be a value on Wikidata, maybe should have its own item. --Tinker Bell ★ ♥ 05:55, 29 November 2025 (UTC)
- I gave this a try, adding Lucy H. Bode as name for North Carolina Secretary of Health and Human Services. This works OK.
- On the one hand, it does add the name to the item and it doesn't invoke the inverse and value type constraints on position holder. (Of course, position name string also could not have an inverse constraint.)
- On the other hand, though, it appears separately from the chronology of position holders, and I can imagine people wondering if they should include names in both places, or listing the name rather than setting up the position holder with the inverse constraint. It is also difficult to query, since name is a property with limited support that can't be filtered by value in Wikidata Query Builder.
- I also gave "no value" + object named as (P1932) a try. On the plus side, this keeps the name with the chronology of position holders. On the other hand, it does invoke the inverse constraint flag and is also difficult to query.
- Depending on how we see the scope of Wikidata, perhaps anyone who held a significant position should have an item. Yet in practice these items are not getting created. And if they were created, little public information may be available for people who don't have an extensive public career. And again people have different opinions about the value of items with minimal data. So it's a tradeoff and I think being able to capture the name strings would lead to overall more and better information.
- Personally I still think both position holder name string and candidate name string would be useful for tracking the careers of people in politics and government. Having the names recorded in a way that is difficult to query seems less than ideal. Candidates and government position holders, like authors, are usually easy to verify through official sources, so this would not be overly broad or vague. These properties would constrain the names enough that they could be queried and consolidated into items for those people who do wind up having significant public careers. JMMaok (talk) 19:49, 29 November 2025 (UTC)
- @JMMaok: P1810 is only to be used as a qualifier on existing statements; see the constraints at the bottom of subject named as (P1810) for a note to that effect. By "novalue" and "somevalue (unknown value)" we refer to the special values a statement can take and not to any item placeholders. (I have taken the liberty of adjusting your novalue+P1932 example to use the "somevalue (unknown value)" special value instead of the placeholder you used.) Motivation
[edit]Entities related to education in Quebec all have a distinct official GDUNO ID. A central database at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (Q3315242) keeps a record of name, complete address, website, latitude-longitude coordinates, phone number and so on for all of them.
GDUNO stands for “Gestion des données uniques des organismes”, which roughly translates to “management of organisms' unique data”.
Unfortunately, I could not find a prettier website to display the data than the one specified above. There is an interactive map which shows the IDs but does not allow search using the IDs. There is an online form to search by ID but it only works via HTTP POST requests.
As the GDUNO ID is associated with Quebec, not with the whole Canada (education is a provincial matter in Canada), the property would likely need a applies to jurisdiction (P1001) set to Quebec (Q176).
This new property would simplify gathering references for education entities in Quebec, as the GDUNO database is the primary source for Quebec school organisms' data. Ptaff (talk) 16:05, 29 January 2026 (UTC)

Comment Thank you. I'm not familiar with the banking sector. Is there any Bank, which issues other or multiple IBANs that can not be deducted from the country (P17) value? Otherwise ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code (P297) of country (P17) would be enough. --NGOgo (WikiProject Nonprofits) 19:34, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
Comment I think this should be item-valued with the Wikidata item for country as the value. country (P17) doesn't work as presumably that should reflect the country of origin or headquarters-location of a bank, not the country(ies) where it is allowed to do business? ArthurPSmith (talk) 20:58, 19 February 2026 (UTC)
- Agree, it should be item-typed. Using items allow further navigating the Wikidata graph (e.g. to find out since when the country is participating in IBAN, what its regulatory organization is, maybe later even how to interpret/validate its IBANs). The values should either be separate “IBAN country” items, if that makes sense, or just the usual country items Andorra (Q228), Albania (Q222) etc. In either case, a constraint can ensure that only IBAN member countries can be specified, e.g. property constraint (P2302)value-type constraint (Q21510865)
class (P2308)IBAN country or property constraint (P2302)value-requires-statement constraint (Q21510864)property (P2306)member of (P463) (the former makes sense in either case, the latter only if the usual country items are used).I added a “see also” for the BIC code. If I understand it correctly, all banks issuing IBANs have BICs? If so, an item-requires-statement constraint (Q21503247) could also be added. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 05:53, 25 February 2026 (UTC)item of property constraint (P2305)IBAN
Comment Revolut (Q22908307) is an interesting example for discussion, because it works in ~40 countries. Do we expect to have a separate item for every branch with one IBAN value or 40 values in the main item? —putnik 21:08, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- From the perspective of this property, I think either would be fine. I could find only one BIC, though, REVOGB21, so to fulfill the constraint I proposed above, probably the one-item solution would be more convenient. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 05:53, 25 February 2026 (UTC)

Motivation
[edit]A unique identifier (Jednoznačný identifikátor zdravotnického zařízení) for health care facilities in the Czech Republic ine th National Register of Health Service Providers. Unlike other identifiers, this one is also intended for facilities that are not separate legal entities. There are already more than 200 existing items to which the identifier could be added. Support but could you clarify which part of the URL exactly constitutes the ID? --Epìdosis 17:49, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- There are open data with full dataset. The unique id in this database for e.g. https://nrpzs.uzis.cz/detail-233-vseobecna-fakultni-nemocnice-v-praze-psychiatricka-klinika-sexuologicky-ustav.html is 233. I don't see mechanism to resolve this id to the URL :/ Skim (talk) 10:28, 27 February 2026 (UTC)

Comment the links are not resolving for me, but if we want the id to be just the number here then somebody should check whether some version of the URL with just the number and a constant string after (+ .html at the end) will work. ArthurPSmith (talk) 22:03, 3 March 2026 (UTC)

[edit]This property will structure the military significance ratings (Class A, B, C, D) for American Civil War battles as defined by the 1993 CWSAC report. These ratings are currently used as the primary organizational structure for the 'List of American Civil War battles' on Wikipedia, but they are not yet available as machine-readable data on Wikidata. Adding this property will allow researchers to perform complex queries across all 384 classified engagements. Loochster (talk) 01:29, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
