Motivation

[edit]

Kloekecode (Q138348544) are unique identifiers assigned to several thousand towns, villages, and hamlets in the Netherlands, Flanders, French Flanders, and north-western Germany. The system was developed in the 1920s by the Dutch dialectologist Gesinus Gerhardus Kloeke (Q15622763) and remains in use, with ongoing expansion and maintenance by the Meertens Institute (Q487857).

The codes are widely used to construct linguistic maps and to visualise dialect variation geographically. A practical example of this application is the online dialect map interface developed by the Meertens Instituut, available at kaart.meertens.knaw.nl.
