Sorry for making you uncomfortable at Wikidata:Project chat. Sometimes I lose focus and I am not native english speaker and have to use Google Translate to improve my language, I can't reply immediately. Please forgive me if you can. Henrydat (talk) 13:11, 17 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hey Andy, I don't know my way around Wikidata projectspace at all. What do you think of my query on that talk page? If you think it's worth pursuing, is there something I should do/somewhere I should raise it to get it more attention or is it something you can help with? Best, Harry Mitchell (talk) 18:11, 28 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

That's a very valid concern; I think it's in the right place, but I don't know the answer. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:34, 28 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

advise on running automatic pywikibot scripts on a raspberry pi .

[edit]

i got a new raspberry pi device for home use but i ' m new to raspberry pi platform .

i want to first try running some of the python scripts written for pywikibot to test its stability for the internship project you ' ve mentored before : https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Requests_for_permissions/Bot/ADSBot_English_Paper .

i ' ll appreciate if there are some advises on running automatic scripts on the raspberry pi platform .

my preferred os is openbsd for running the scripts .

That's outside my skill-set; User:Mike Peel may be able to help, or suggest a better place to ask. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:51, 28 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
ok . i might just ping User:Mike Peel .

@Feliciss: Apologies for the slow response. Running pywikibot on a raspberry pi is quite straightforward - just set up python and install the dependencies, and off you go. It seems to be best practice to use a virtual environment to do that nowadays, but Pi bot just runs on Raspberry Pi OS without a virtual environment atm (I might update that at some point). Then it's just crontab for auto-running the scripts on a schedule. Hope that helps, let me know if I can help further! Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 17:49, 16 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
thx for the advice !
some unresolved questions to date :
in someway i thought i was able to run the pywikibot script
over the wifi . however i often find the wifi connection is
unstable and will auto disconnect in an unpredictable rate
. will it affect the crontab for auto running the scripts for
pywikibot if i set to auto reconnect if disconnected or
should i plug an ethernet cable for best internet connection
to a raspberry pi ?
python venv - is added on v3.3 and python v3.5.2 and above
supports running pywikibot on a raspberry pi . however ,
i found some legacy oses that only have python 2 ports
( e.g. plan 9 ) . to my up to date knowledge i only know
this info and would like to know if python 2 is deprecated
in all of the mediawiki suites ?

Hey Andy, me again! Is there a property for "moved to current location" or similar? If not, should there be, or do we only care about present-day location for Wikidata purposes? The context is the above item, which was moved from its previous location in 1922, having stood there for not quite a century. Hope all is well with you. Best, Harry Mitchell (talk) 12:33, 14 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

You can record more than one location and qualify each or any of them with a "start time" and/or "end time" property. LMK if you want a demo.
Well here; hope you're going well. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:07, 14 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Andy, didn't think of that! I suppose that's the advantage of asking an expert! All is well here; I must get up to the Midlands at some point but will probably be the spring now. I have an annual pass to the Black Country Living Museum that expires in August so I'm determined to get back before then. Hopefully we'll find time for a pint. And of course Wikimania next year is in Paris; would be good to have a strong UK contingent there! Harry Mitchell (talk) 13:52, 16 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
you can also highlight the most-true statement by giving it a Preferred rank preferred rank. See also Help:Ranking. – Shisma (talk) 15:53, 16 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
This is not necessary, if only one has no end date. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:00, 16 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I would still recommend to do so, if someone queries the location, they probably expect to get the current location, unless otherwise specified. That's what ranks do – Shisma (talk) 16:07, 16 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I can see why that might be helpful. I can also see why Andy says it's unnecessary. I'll leave it to the experts, but thank you for the advice. :) Harry Mitchell (talk) 18:20, 16 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
