    Qualifying student types

    [edit]

We have rich data on American colleges and universities in the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (Q6042926). I've experimented with qualifying count of students (P2196) using applies to part (P518). For instance, Valparaiso University (Q186047) has recent students count numbers at http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?id=152600#enrolmt, and so I added those values qualified by applies to part (P518):undergraduate student (Q21094885) and applies to part (P518):graduate student (Q21094889), plus point in time (P585). I'd love to hear opinions on whether this is an appropriate solution, and if so, whether you support extending qualification to student types like full-time job (Q1198527) or race/ethnicity or distance education, for instance. Unit Constraints

    [edit]

Can we get the unit constraints for student count in order? It's currently empty, leading tools to warn. @User:Laboramus --YaguraStation (talk) 22:20, 3 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Missing point in time (P585) qualifier

Should qualifier time period (P2348) be allowed too ?

    [edit]

Seems like a lot of french schools were imported using a qualifier time period (P2348) instead of the required qualifier point in time (P585), were time period is something like academic year 2022-2023 in France (Q119628110) : a custom range of dates for an academic year, spanning over two calendar years. There are around 31557 qualifiers with that value at the moment (see d:Special:WhatLinksHere/Q119628110), and as many warnings "required qualifier constraint (Q21510856)". IMHO, that qualifier time period (P2348) should probably also be allowed as an alternative to point in time (P585) when using any instance of academic year (Q915466) as value, as it does seem quite relevant. --FoeNyx (talk) 18:29, 21 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello FoeNyx, thank you for your remarks. In French official records, the number of students for each school is recorded once during each academic year, which spans from September to July. That's why the qualifier is time period (P2348). Assigning a specific day would be wrong, and a calendar year would be confusing. Arpyia (talk) 06:47, 28 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello Arpyia, I think you misunderstood my question (which means it probably wasn't worded clearly enough, my bad). I wasn't asking for an explanation of why P2348 is used but rather if, in the light of those entries, we should also add P2348 to the list of allowed qualifiers. Meanwhile, @Rémi sim added it in april, so I guess I wasn't the only one who thought it should be added. Cheers. --FoeNyx (talk) 07:08, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
The number of students can change within the academic year due to, for example, transfer or death. So this kind of statistics usually reports the number at a predefined point of time. It could be the beginning/end of academic year, or some other timing (e.g., May 1st used in the School Survey in Japan). So point in time (P585) should be required, although time period (P2348) is also allowed. Mzaki (talk) 14:51, 17 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
And technically speaking, required qualifier constraint (Q21510856) can take exactly single property (P2306). Thus, we cannot specify that a statement requires either qualifier A or qualifier B. The edit in this April has been reverted. Mzaki (talk) 15:22, 17 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
