Mayoral candidate Ponto Downing campaigns to ‘Reopen Jackson’
The primary election for the city of Jackson is Tuesday.
Ponto Downing said he wants to be the city’s next mayor.
"It looks like a third-world country. The crime, the blight, I can go on and on and on all day," Downing said.
Downing said he’s been a candidate for public office before, but has never won an election.
"I've run for office 11 times. I’m strictly a one-man band, and I’m running to make speeches," Downing said.
He spends most of his days making those speeches outside the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which is the state’s only abortion clinic. Downing said his campaign slogan is "Reopen Jackson and close the clinic."
"First of all, you’ve got to close the clinic. That means Congress needs to overturn Roe v Wade," Downing said.
Downing also said crime and infrastructure are a problem in the city and his plan of action is simply electing a Republican.
"The Republican Party runs this state. You’ve got to go along with them. You’ve got to coexist. You’ve got to be cooperative, so that’s what I will be: completely cooperative with the powers to be," Downing said.
