Renowned cultural figures from Hollywood and beyond are paying tribute to director Rob Reiner, who was killed with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, on December 14 in an apparent homicide. After Reiner’s death, his friends Larry David and Billy Crystal were seen at his home, per People, with Crystal looking on the edge of tears.

Reiner began his career acting on the sitcom All in the Family, created by Norman Lear, who died in 2023. “Norman often referred to Rob as a son, and their close relationship was extraordinary, to us and the world,” his family said in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter. “Norman would have wanted to remind us that Rob and Michele spent every breath trying to make this country a better place, and they pursued that through their art, their activism, their philanthropy, and their love for family and friends.”

Kathy Bates, whom Reiner directed to an Oscar for Misery, was “devastated” by the loss, per NBC News. “I loved Rob,” Bates said in a statement. “He was brilliant and kind, a man who made films of every genre to challenge himself as an artist. He also fought courageously for his political beliefs. He changed the course of my life.” Now, people who worked with Reiner and those who were inspired by his films are mourning the loss of the great director.

Below, tributes to the life and career of Rob Reiner from his friends, collaborators, and famous fans.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

The actor and politician called Reiner a “rare talent,” following a similar message from his son Patrick. “He was a creative genius who left us some of the greatest movies of all time, and he was a wonderful friend. My thoughts are with his family,” he concluded.

Paul Walter Hauser

In a lengthy Instagram post, Hauser credited Reiner’s A Few Good Men as “THE reason” he became an actor and wanted to direct. He recalled Reiner’s kindness during a brief meeting in 2010 when the director shared stories about co-writing The Story of Us with his wife. “I hate that Rob and his wife are gone from this world, but they sure as hell impacted me and countless others while here,” Hauser wrote. He concluded his tribute by noting that he will continue to carry Reiner with him: “Sick to my stomach. Headed back to set. Holding him close as I do the gig that he inspired me to do.”

Wil Wheaton

Wheaton wrote in a blog post that he is still processing the “tragic, senseless, devastating loss” of Reiner, who directed him in 1986’s Stand By Me. “When I was turning 13, and realizing that my own father didn’t care about me, that my mother didn’t see me as a son, but as a thing she could put to work, Rob Reiner made me feel loved, valued, seen, and respected,” he wrote. “He made sure I knew that I was important to him and his movie. He made sure I knew that he saw every actor he could for my role, and he chose me because he saw so much of Gordie in me.”

Wheaton described the director as a big part of his “coming of age” for showing him “unconditional affection and approval” when he was a teenager. He added that he had been hoping to reunite with Reiner for Stand By Me’s 40th anniversary next year. “The world is a better place thanks to his activism and the way he chose to use all of his privilege and influence,” Wheaton continued. “Rest in peace Rob and Michele. May their memories be a blessing.”
