Among the better surprises at The Game Awards 2025, we caught our first look at Larian’s next project, Divinity, courtesy of on-stage performers and a pre-rendered trailer. Remember all that fuss about a statue in the Mojave Desert? It turns out it was a big old teaser for the return to the studio’s RPG series.

The series has been dormant since 2017’s excellent Divinity Original Sin 2, with Larian using the intervening years to bring us the acclaimed and successful Baldur’s Gate 3. A much-loved IP paired with an even more respected developer means there’s plenty to be excited about. Here’s everything you need to know about Larian’s next RPG, Divinity.

✓ VideoGamer Summary
  • Divinity is Larian Studios’ next RPG and the studio’s “biggest game ever”.
  • There’s no release date yet, nor do we have any confirmed platforms.
  • Only one trailer has been released so far, depicting a pagan-like effigy burning ceremony.

Predicted Divinity release window

As of writing, Larian has yet to share any concrete details about when we’ll see Divinity in players’ hands. The announcement trailer didn’t offer anything resembling a release window, leaving us to speculate. We’d tentatively expect to see Divinity release at the very earliest in late 2028 or 2029, but we wouldn’t rule out 2030.

Larian is known for taking its time with development and not rushing releases. The absence of gameplay footage in the trailer also suggests the game is relatively early in development, especially considering Baldur’s Gate 3 only released in 2023. There was roughly a six-year gap between Original Sin 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3, and we’d expect a similar timeframe this time around.

Divinity gameplay and story predictions

Larian has described Divinity as the studio “unchaining its ambitions” to piece together an RPG with “greater breadth and depth than ever before.” At The Game Awards 2025, Geoff Keighley introduced the game as Larian’s “biggest game ever,” dwarfing even the rangy Baldur’s Gate 3.

Larian boss Sven Vincke noted, “Despite our long history with the series, this is our first game entitled ‘Divinity.’ We’re ready to bring everything we’ve done previously into one place. This marks the beginning of something with more breadth, depth, and intimacy than anything we’ve created before. We’ve been building toward this moment ever since we took our fate into our own hands. This is the Divinity we’ve always wanted to make, and you’re going to have loads of fun with it.”

Reading between the lines here, this suggests all the elements that we know and love from the Divinity series – character customization, plentiful dialogue options, open-ended build tweaking, turn-based combat, and best-in-class storytelling – but expanded and improved upon.

Divinity trailers

Larian has only released one trailer so far. It was beamed out to the world at The Game Awards 2025 and depicts a much bleaker, twisted, dark fantasy-infused spin on Larian’s Divinity series.

A crowned man is burnt alive, suspended inside a wicker effigy. Around him, gaggles of villagers celebrate in a boozy, orgiastic mess: pigs slurp up vomit, the crowds prance about to a ditty tune, a man navigates the raucous mass on stilts, masked men self-flagellate, revelers fornicate out in the open, and a big-eyed child hangs a small effigy onto the wicker man.

As night falls, three conjoined moons rise in the sky. The wicker is set alight, and the crowd rejoices to the cadence of the crowned man’s wails of pain and terror. The flames gnaw deeper into his flesh until a bulging boil bursts on his back, releasing a crimson stream of blood and entrails towards the sky.

Panicked, the villagers flee. The trailer cuts to black, revealing Larian’s logo and then a mass of bodies that’s a perfect match for the Mojave Desert statue, which, it turns out, is called the Hellstone.

Divinity platforms

Right now, Larian hasn’t even vaguely hinted at what platforms Divinity will be playable on. That said, Larian never misses PC, so it’s more or less guaranteed to be playable there. We’re fast approaching the end of the console generation, so it’s possible we could see it land in the first batch of next-gen games on PS6 (or whatever Sony decides to call its next console) and the next family of Xbox consoles.

It could also be released as a cross-gen title, playable on both current-gen and next-gen machines, including the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Either way, we’ll have to sit tight for the moment and wait for Larian to share more details in the next year or two.
