How to use TSA PreCheck® benefits

Don't forget to use your KTN

Your Known Traveler Number is the key to enjoying TSA PreCheck

Please note, TSA PreCheck benefits are not automatic. To get the TSA PreCheck indicator to appear on your boarding pass you must:

  • Add your Known Traveler Number (KTN) in the ‘KTN' field of all airline reservations, double-checking you enter the digits correctly.
  • Confirm that your name in the airline reservation matches the name used during enrollment. This includes your middle name or middle initial if one was used on your application. Learn how to update your personal information if your name has changed.
  • Confirm that your date of birth on the airline reservation is correct.
  • Contact your airline to update your reservation if you have an existing airline reservation that does not include your KTN.

How to find your KTN and profile details

TSA PreCheck members

If you enrolled through CLEAR, IDEMIA, or Telos:

  • Your KTN starts with AC, TT, or TE
  • Your KTN is 9 to 10 digits long
  • Your KTN can be a mix of letters and numbers
  • If you can’t find your KTN or do not remember your enrollment provider, use the KTN Lookup Tool.

If you need to check what personal information you used during enrollment, review your account on your enrollment provider’s website: CLEARIDEMIA or Telos. If you need to make any changes to your membership profile, contact your enrollment provider.

Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI members

Global Entry

If you enrolled in a trusted traveler program that includes TSA PreCheck benefits:

  • Use your PASS ID as your KTN
  • Your PASS ID is a nine-digit number and usually begins with 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 50, 70, 80, 95, 98, or 99
  • Your PASS ID can be found on the upper left corner of the back of your trusted traveler card or by logging into your account.

If you need to check what personal information you used during enrollment, confirm your information on your trusted traveler card or log into your account.

If you need to update your passport information, log into your account. If your passport update involves a name change, please contact CBP for assistance. It is important that your name used during enrollment matches your name on the airline reservation.

Employment-based TSA PreCheck benefits

If you have a KTN because of your employment, it is important to note that there is no set alpha-numeric format for the KTN, as it varies based on the employer. If you believe you are eligible for TSA PreCheck based on your employment and you are not part of the groups below, the best way to retrieve your KTN and confirm your personal details is to get in contact with your employer.

If you are a uniformed service member or a federal DOD civilian employee, you are eligible to receive TSA PreCheck for free. Confirm your eligibility and learn how to use your benefits on our uniformed service member page

If you are a DHS federal employee, visit the TSA PreCheck for DHS employees page on DHS Connect for instructions on how to receive your KTN. From the main DHS Connect page, scroll to the bottom for Employee Shortcuts and click on the TSA PreCheck checkmark icon. You can also visit that page to look up your KTN.

If you have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an active HME security threat assessment and meet the TSA PreCheck eligibility requirements, you are eligible to receive TSA PreCheck. To get TSA PreCheck on your boarding pass, use the two-letter state abbreviation from the issuing state, followed by your CDL number as your KTN on your airline reservations. (For example, NY123456 for a New York-issued CDL.)

Note: If you obtained an HME via waiver from TSA, you are not eligible for TSA PreCheck.

To confirm your eligibility and learn how to use your benefits, read the TSA PreCheck HME FAQs.

If you are a TWIC cardholder and meet the TSA PreCheck eligibility requirements, you are eligible to receive TSA PreCheck. To get TSA PreCheck on your boarding pass, use your TWIC Credential Identification Number as your KTN on your airline reservations.

Note: If you obtained a TWIC via a waiver from TSA, you are not eligible for TSA PreCheck.

To confirm your eligibility and learn how to use your benefits, read the TSA PreCheck TWIC FAQs
