Sip & Guzzle
New York
- Three Cents Best New Opening Award 2025

A bar of two halves from a Japanese-American powerhouse duo
Bipartite bar Sip & Guzzle is the latest collaboration between New York's finest Steve Schneider and Asian bar magnate Shingo Gokan. A sister bar to SG Club in Tokyo, Sip & Guzzle continues the story of the first samurai to have visited America in the 19th century, bringing to liquid life their trans-Pacific experiences.
The ground floor space is Guzzle and this is where you'll find Schneider – a bartender to his core, holding court like he once did so famously at Employees Only. With its lively, tavern-like vibe, this is the place to quaff – guzzle even – Japanese beers, highballs and classically driven cocktails. The drink to drink is the Miami Vice Negroni – the traditional recipe as you know it twisted with an infusion of strawberries and coconut washed before being served over a large clear ice cube.
Before you leave Guzzle, you must try the Bikini – billed as the world's thinnest sandwich and made with comté and ham, it's also one of the most delicious.
Now it's time to quieten things down and head downstairs. As the name Sip suggest, Gokan's basement bar is more about slower, considered drinking. It's somewhere to get to know someone – and what they're drinking. That could be any of a raft of Japanese-accented crafted cocktails on offer, but the Tomato Tree is the stand out. It's a non-mover on the menu by popular demand, made with tomato water, dill-infused gin, shochu, mastiha, St-Germain and lemon. It's savoury, delectable, and (don't say it out loud) totally guzzle-worthy.
