Jess Phillips has served as the MP for Birmingham Yardley since 2015 and the minister for safeguarding and violence against women and girls since 2024. Born in Birmingham on October 9, 1981, to politically active parents, her childhood ambition was to become prime minister. An outspoken Labour backbencher, in 2016 she resigned as a parliamentary private secretary in protest against Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership and in 2023 she resigned as a shadow minister over the party’s position on a ceasefire in Gaza. Phillips is also known for her advocacy on women's rights and each year reads to MPs a list of women killed by men in the previous 12 months.
