In an effort to help users stay safe, Action Fraud has now issued three rules that are definitely worth remembering. These include being cautious before responding and not dialing numbers included in the message.

Three rules from Action Fraud

  1. Break the contact – don't reply, click on any links, call any phone numbers or make any payments.
  2. Check if it's genuine - don't use the numbers or address in the message – use the details from their official website.
  3. Before you delete the email, forward it to report@phishing. gov.uk in the UK.

US users can report phishing and spoofing scams to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov here.

That last piece of advice could be crucial in preventing others from falling prey to such scams in the future.

"Your reports lead to the removal of malicious emails and websites that are used to perpetrate fraud and cyber crime," confirmed Action Fraud.

So, stay vigilant and keep an eye out for any suspicious emails.
