Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's wife is former sports star and gives him 'brutally honest' advice
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander often credits his wife and longtime partner Hailey Summers on his rise to being a game away from winning an NBA championship
Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is on the cusp of becoming the ninth player in NBA history to win both NBA MVP and Finals MVP in the same season.
SGA credited his MVP win to his wife, Hailey Summers, and has often praised her throughout his recent rise that leaves him on the doorstep of an NBA title, even after a painful Game 6 loss.
Gilgeous-Alexander first posted pictures with Summers, who is also Canadian, on his Instagram in 2017. While he went off to Kentucky to play basketball, she ventured to the University of Albany, where she was a two-year captain of the soccer team. The pair rekindled after school, with Gilgeous-Alexander now in the NBA.
In a 2024 interview with Andscape, the Thunder superstar credited his partner for keeping him in check. “She is brutally honest,” he admitted.
“She played basketball. She sees things. If my mindset is off, she makes sure I know. Those are the things that I can control. And she can see if I wear it on my sleeve.”
“She can see if I’m not aggressive and say, ‘What is the point of being out there if you’re not being aggressive?’ It’s a little hard, but I’m like, ---- you’re right.’"
The pair were married in February 2024 and welcomed their first child, Ares Alexander, on April 25 that same year. Gilgeous-Alexander shouted both out during his MVP speech.
“Hailey Summers, thank you for everything you are — for me, for our son, Ares," he said. "You were the first person to show me what love really meant ... what sacrifice really meant," he said. "And I can’t wait to spend the rest of this journey called life with you."
Gilgeous-Alexander scored a league-best 32.7 points a game on 51.9 percent shooting to go along with 6.4 assists and 5.0 rebounds a night
