An active shooter opened fire Friday morning at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, fatally wounding at least one person, authorities said.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter confirmed the shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. and said the condition of the victim is unknown.
“It is too early to provide specifics on casualties or injuries. Our primary concern is the safety and security of our personnel, and we are focusing on managing and resolving this situation,” he said.
The Pascagoula Police said the suspect is now in custody; however, their name has not been released at this time.
An Ingalls Shipbuilding spokesperson also confirmed the incident. “We are urging all personnel to shelter in place and to await further instructions. Law enforcement was promptly notified and is currently at the shipyard responding to the situation. We will provide updates as soon as we have more information. Our focus right now is on managing the immediate situation and ensuring the safety of everyone on site,” the spokesperson said.
Emergency responders, including ambulance crews, were seen on site, with some personnel riding in the back of a pickup truck, according to video footage shared on social media.
A large law enforcement presence remains at the facility as officers sweep the area and secure the shipyard.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area until the situation is resolved.
